Heya guys!!

Posted by: Skeleton Jack   in Fun

Heya guys!!  How’ve you been?  :D

So I skimmed through the comments and approved most of them.  A few got deleted because…well…they were “trollish”.  So go figure…  Comments don’t automatically get approved people.  It’s a case by case basis unless you keep using the same account info.  *shrug*

Champions Online & MMO’s

So I played CO for some time, and it was cool.  Their max level is 40 and I was at 30 within the first few days without really making extra time for the game (still working, etc…).  I tried out the Beta and got active on the forums like one of my readers posted.  But after about 2 weeks (Beta time included) the ”WoW burnout” returned.

So over the past week I’ve mostly ignored CO…  I made like 2 1/2 levels in the past week, versus 30 in a few days…see what I mean?  meh  It’s a good game (CO), but the MMO grind I think is more what is bugging me.  Level caps will be raised, new content will be released, mechanics will change, etc…

I’ve been hardcore MMO’ing between City of Heroes and World of Warcraft going on about 6+ years now.  And that’s just the “hardcore” side of things.  I played EQ2, DAoC and EQ as well from their inceptions as well, just much more casually.  Is it that I need a break, or that I’m just done?  No idea honestly…  Atm CO is there when I’m bored and don’t feel like doing anything…

What have I been doing?

Been keeping at my D20 games on Fri and Sun like normal.  Friday night is a high fantasy campaign centered around helping return an ancient kingdom (recently refounded) to newfound glory.  Sunday night is also high fantasy, but deals with a city founded upon a necropolis and a rising civil war between the ancient undead families.  We, the living, are trying of course to not die in the crossfire.

I’ve also been playing a lot more board games.  No, not monopoly…sheesh.  Things like Tomb, Android, and Runebound.  There’s a ton of other ones, but those 3 are probably my favorite hands down.  Turns out one of our gaming buddies spends a ridiculous amount of cash on board games…  Who am I not to help him out by playing those games with him, heh.

The rest of my time is spread between movies, reading, and working out.  Pretty boring, but it’s been relaxing.  Really nice honestly.

WoW

So I saw the new expansion was coming out and how MMO Champion’s predictions were 100% dead on about the new races.  I don’t care what people think, but that guy’s got some inside connections.  No way you get that kind of information early and 100% accurate without knowing someone on the inside track.  Must be nice!!

And Worgen?!?!  Aw come on guys?!  Who else’s first thought when they heard of Worgen were like…  “WORGEN DEATHKNIGHT ZOMG!!!!”  You’re second thought *should* have been how you were going to get a name change so your DK’s name would be on the Worgen DK!!  ;)

Goblins iz cool an’ all…but WEREWOLF DK F’ING PWN FACE!!  Just sayin’…

Elitest Jerks

Did I pull information from there?  Oh but hell yes.  Who wouldn’t?!!?  That’s like accusing talk show hosts of watching the news…  It’s stupid.  It’s an open and excellent source of information for WoW players.  Use it.  I did.  But then I also used plenty of random wow sources, in game testing, and just random info.  In the end everything that I posted here I made into my own.

I’m proud of the fact that I often changed info to what I believed was best, regardless of what EJ peeps (or commenters) said.  *shrug*  Take it or leave it.  I’m not making anyone read this site, now or ever.

What’s next?

Who knows?  I’ve been thinking about writing that book.  I’ve been working on a new story and plotline for a table top campaign.  I’ve got it into my head to go back and fix Realms of Wonder, a table top role playing game I wrote and co-created with a friend.  And do the game right this time.  I’ve considered also taking a step back and considering blogging more.

But honestly I don’t know.  Right now I’m focused on work, working out, and just enjoying life.  Where that leads me is up in the air atm.  Hope you guys are doing well.

Glad to find out your alive!

Hey, check out a game called Up Front by Avalon Hill, its a combat simulation card game but its about the BEST game ive EVER played once you learn how to play it….

It is a old game and no longer in print i believe (unless they finally started the reprint, the game is extreemly popular with the people who actually know about it) but you can usually find an old copy on Ebay of somoene who spent the last 20 years playing all the scenarios and funny enough, open their used box and still find game pieces they never poped out of the origional sheet cause they still never learned the full potential of the game….

the game is flat out amazing, i have a little interest in combat/war but nothing serious – this game makes me crave to play and everyone that ive been able to get to sit still long enough to learn has felt the same….

i HIGHLY Suggest you check this out if you can get a copy off ebay or such (Definately worth grabbing a copy especially if it comes with the 2 Major Expansions – which you wont use immediately but usually minimal extra cost and if you do get into the game, its a few extra countries you can use in Open Games along with some extra tanks and artilary for the old ones i believe too)

Thank you for suggesting champions online, honestly i really wish they had left the game as casual as it was pre sept 1st, but the way it is now is still enjoyable imho, once they nurf alot of the bullshit overpowered pvp crap, then it will be even more enjoyable, only things i have to complain about are the insanely large 100ft aoe hits from cosmic/legendary npc, no strategy other than corpse running…. rest of the game is minor bugs and balancing issues so i think it will actually polish out pretty well, but yes after the sept 1st patch, it really lost its casual feel, like ALL of it…

Thx again SKJ — my dk dps has suffered recently cause i havent wanted to deal with elitiestjerks and without my DK blog every day and the slight interest in CO, i basically lost all interest in WoW as well, i do log in for raids and grab my gear with my raids and wahtnot, but i never log in to do my daily or anything else, just when i get a Txt msg from a guildies “Raid” — sure i guess… heheh

Welp Glad all is well, Ramble done…

Glad to see your back though SJ.

Worgen DKs are definately going to pwn face. I love the T8 look and with my green, rusted, and seen to be violet protodrakes, I definately will be race changing instead of completely rerolling.

On a side note, i’m a long time reader but first time poster, and SJ I don’t know how to thank you enough. I’ve been looking here and at Elitist Jerks ever since Naxx was “serious business”, and i’m glad to see that you came back. Many luck in your adventures!

Good to see your still around SJ. Bad news about CO.. very few MMO’s are ever great off the bat. Will an MMO ever be perfect at launch? I doubt it myself.

WoW is giving me the shits again. As i type, Age of Conan is trying to download the latest patch. I bought the collectors edition when it was released, played it for a month or so and binned it.

Now, after a year has passed, I’m going to have another crack at it. If it still fails, I guess I’ll try something else. Hard to find something captivating lately MMO wise.

Not sure if you ever tried Age of Conan SJ, but maybe you could give it a shot. I love the GFX and the gritty feel to it. I just hope the updates the game has seen over the past year has made it into something of that it should have been!

PS: What ever happened to that side-kick of yours who was supposed to be blogging with you about DK’s? It seems she got swallowed up by the wow-black-hole?

peace

Honestly, the only thing that enabled me to overcome WoW burnout ended up being 2 things:

1. Focusing like a laser on end game content in THIS expansion and no other, through progression raiding guilds.

2. Time.

The first one is a not a destination but a tool. I’m in my 3rd progression guild on my 80 huntard, 2nd on my DK . . . for WotLK alone. I’ve learned not to get attached to guilds, DO get attached to guildmates you identify with. Guilds will come and go, so don’t get so attached you sieze up over leaving, or it crumbling.

The last one ended up being a full year away from WoW. I started with Vanilla back in Ought 6 and kept playing right up until BC came out. Hated Burning Crusade. Absolutely LOATHED IT. Hellfire ruined the entire experience for me so much, I quit WoW. That’s not my fault, that’s Blizzard’s fault for making an area that ran so many people away.

Around that time my guild attempted to become a BC raiding guild (and failed) and that did it. I needed a break after a year and a half. Spent a year away from WoW, came back for WotLK. Have enjoyed it ever since because I feel like I’m making progress towards end game content. No feeling of progress is what burned me out.

The real trick here is to set a goal and aim for THAT instead of trying to conquer WoW for all time. And make progress toward that goal. Arthas is my target. That’s a lot simpler than trying to forecast what I’ll do in Cataclysm (and beyond). Get to Icecrown and kill him. Everything else can handle itself once I accomplish that. But until then, that’s my focus. Otherwise you feel like you are in a never ending ratrace that IS neverending. And that’s depressing, and shuts down your enthusiasm. Arthas is MY end game. Once I reach I might set Deathwing as my new goal, maybe not.

It might be you set Deathwing as YOUR new target, set WoW aside for a while until it gets here, and then start again. Or find a progression guild and finish the job with Arthas. Either way, you have somke options. [shrug] Just some personal observations from my own previous WoW burnout.

Ugh I tried CO as you did but like you said, its the mmo grind that becomes tiresome, that and I locked myself melee foolishly with no ranged energy builder so I have to wait for another respec

Hey SJ, I think the issue with MMOs that you’re feeling in general is due to how they are all being made with the same basic formula. Lots of grinding to waste your time, spoon-fed rewards via content patches + expansions. The repetition of it all just sucks the fun out of the game. I noticed you were really excited about CO to start out, but it all faded really quickly after you figured out the basic layout of progress and its similarities to the WoW formula.

Maybe someday we’ll find a game that ventures out to expand the limits of MMO gaming… someday..

Hey SJ! I’ve loved your site since a friend pointed it out to me. Have you been looking at the EJ site related to the upcoming patch and its effect on UH DK? It seems that there was an optimal SS build the entire time.

I would love to hear your take on it all as I like your theory crafting ideas.

CO was a different game before launch, you could hit top level in about a days time if you knew where to go, i bet with a lil prac people would be hittin max level within 12-18hrs even… but then they really hit the game hard with the nurf bat to slow down progress to try to keep the playerbase within the small bit of content they had, it was to easy to breeze through, but that was very fun, it was alot more fun to play 10 dif chars and level them all up rather than have to focus on one forever, but i dont think the developers looked at it that way, we all wanted alts pre-launch, after launch everyone ends up shelving their main until respec, then back to main after respec and bored without anything to do but pvp to finish levleing (because it was so easy to fly around from quest loc to quest loc you missed all the missions hidden in the landscape….

what are we expecting out of a game tho for end game content, if they give us max level in no time, then what do we want to have available to us to do…..

to many games similar to wow, so are we really looking for more raiding? or is the bulk of the community looking for just straight pvp all the time? (i get bored with it quickly, unless its very large map, battleground like, with many objectives, ongoing, many npc ect.. basically open world pvp that never ends…… LOTRO’s Ettenmoors is a good example of a good start to an ongoing PVP battle….throw about 10 different zones completely redesigned goals ect, maby that would hold peoples attentions, along with maby some group/raid content to gear up or such… (throw that gear content right in the middle of the pvp, FIGHT FOR IT! hehe)

i just cant even figure out what even i want out of a game in the end…. i do enjoy the raid content of wow when im not dealing with the bullshit of the people/guild drama/raids falling apart/people afking/not listening or payin attn (WHY DO THESE PEOPLE PLAY?!?!)
…but ya kno, thats about maby one day a month if im lucky that we acutally have an enjoyable raid without drama/bitching/bullshit

…ramble…sorry, ill cut it off there….

Hey all,

Having played a s**t ton of WoW as well, I recently quit and have been goofing around with Rome Total War, TF2 and Left 4 Dead. It is nice to not have the MMO grind and repetition. That said, I recently stumbled on this:

http://www.fallenearth.com

Now, I don’t know what to expect. Haven’t touched it yet, still downloading on Steam, but it sounds pretty awesome. Post-apocalyptic MMO w/ FPS elements? I’m in. It is also a lot more sandbox than WoW (no classes, just skills and levels – be what you want). Don’t know if it’ll be any good but thought I’d share. It is an indie release that has been totally outgunned by Aion on the PR front, but I think it could fit the ticket.

Ive had a burnout with WoW aswell, I just hit 80 about a week ago, and my guild is on Ulduar 25, ToC 10. It is almost impossible to find people to do Naxx. Then my guild gets pissed off when I show up to anything with Heroic gear. I try to get gear as much as possible, but its just not happening. Any help with my gear process? I’m a Nelf 80 DK on Winterhoof named Endblade. I’m doing okay now without WoW because I’m lucky because I also play CS:Source and Xbox 360 games like Halo 3:ODST, COD 4 and 5, and Tom clancy’s HAWX. Any help on the gear process of pugging Naxx? Also there are a bunch of raids no one are doing anymore, like The obsidian sanctum and others that I see in the LFM tool. Any Help? I don’t know how you can contact me without everyone else seeing it so maybe a thread on the gear process of new lvl 80s?

I tried out the Obliteration spec and while as Unholy I usually do between 3 and 4 K with the standard rotation, depending on the fight, I can’t break 2500 with Obliterate. I have the rotations down, have the Obliterate spec that you publish, but the damage just is not there. My gear is mostly Ulduar and Conquest vendor, with 2 level 245 pieces, and Omen of Ruin…not the best gear but not bad. Is there some secret to playing the spec that someone used to Unholy SS might miss? Just curious. In any event, thanks for all the great info, which has helped me more than any other site in the game
