Live 3.2 Death Knight Specs: DK DPS, Tank, and PvP

Posted by: Skeleton Jack   in PvP, Specs, Tanking

Update #3 – Lots of the questions asked here are answered on these two posts:

3.2 Questions and Answers by SJ, Part 1

3.2 Questions and Answers by SJ, Part 2

I will be revamping the specs soon, and making a page for them as well.

Live 3.2 Death Knight Specs:  DK DPS, Tank, and PvP

Heya guys!!  So it looks like it’s time for 3.2 release.  Tons of nerfs, buffs, interesting changes, and new toys to play with.  Don’t worry, you are getting a free respec for all of your DK talent trees.

“But what are the new specs?”

Don’t worry, it’s all here for you!!  :D

Blood 3.2 PvE DPS

Blood PvE is pretty much the same as it was in 3.1 release.  The only major difference is that the old 50/0/21 variant build has gone the way of the Dodo.

2H Blood Build - 51/0/20

Rotations

PS – IT - HS – HS - DS - RP  //  DS – HS – HS – HS – HS - RP

Priority System:  Unlike most specs, there is not really a priority system because there are no spare GCD’s in this rotation.  It has been proven Blood does best in BP (not UP) even though it uses all available GCD’s.

You must keep your rotation perfect.  If you have a terrible ms/lag, this spec/rotation may prove difficult for you.

Always keep the 2SR in mind however, as you will want to fire off DC’s and HoW between GCD’s when possible.

Runeforge:  Rune of the Fallen Crusader

Sigil:  Sigil of the Vengeful Heart

Weapon Speeds:  Slow

Presence:  Blood

Note:  I am not a fan of Blood Worms as it will eat up AoE healing in a raid.  In essence, it can and will lead to raid deaths or unnecessary pressure on healers.  Because of that, I spend the typical 3 points in BW into defensive/utility talents since there are 0 available dps talents available at that point.

2H Blood RP Build51/2/18

This RP build is not superior to the standard 51/0/20 spec.  However it gives more RP leeway with the DS Glyph and preventing RP capping, making it 100% viable.  You give up 2 points in your ghoul for more leeway room.

Dual Wield (Frost) 3.2 PvE DPS

The clear leader for 3.2 appears to be Frost DW, but Unholy DW is not dead.  In fact it’s better than it was before.  However Unholy DW is still the loser, ranging from as much as a 10% dps loss to as little as a 3-5% dps loss, leaving it a viable option.

Unholy DW will suffer significantly however in any encounter that you cannot keep at least a 70% uptime on your ghoul.  There is no longer a viable 2H Frost DPS build as the DW build outscales it by such a significant margin as to make it a “dead spec”.

The Frost Tree is officially the “Dual Wield Tree” as of 3.2 for PvE DPS.

DW Frost Oblit/Pest Build0/53/18

Rotations

IT – PS – BS - Pest – OB – RP  //  OB – OB – OB – RP (Set up rotation)

OB - BS - Pest – OB – RP  //  OB – OB – OB – RP (Future rotations once diseases are applied)

Priority System:  Diseases (FF > BP // or Pest) > KM Rime > MaxRP-Dump > OB > BS > FS.  It is important to understand that Rune abilities always take priority over RP abilities.  The one exception to Rune > RP  is if you will go over your RP cap (thereby losing potential RP), then immediately fire off a RP ability.

Always keep the 2SR in mind however, as you will want to fire off FS/HB Rime procs and HoW between GCD’s when possible.  Don’t just RP dump at the end of a rotation.

Howling Blast/Rime Procs:  Attempt to use these with KM procs whenever possible due to HB having a lower crit % chance than FS.  Do not push back a rotation however to do this.  If you have spare GCD’s then it is ok to delay a Rime proc.  Otherwise use KM on FS’s.

This rotation/spec will not proc IIT due to Pest refreshing the diseases.  If you need to be buffing the raid you can take a personal DPS loss (but a raid DPS increase) by ignoring Pest, and subbing in a new glyph.

If you have to provide IIT to the raid you follow the “Set up rotation” only:  IT – PS – BS - BS – OB – RP  //  OB – OB – OB – RP

The secondary glyph choice (instead of GoD) is relatively unimportant, so you could leave it the same or take something like Glyph of Blood Strike if someone actually provided the snare debuff for you.  It won’t impact your dps much by swapping this glyph honestly unless someone is providing the snare debuff.

Runeforge:  Rune of the Fallen Crusader / Rune of the Fallen Crusader *or* Rune of the Fallen Crusader / Rune of Razorice

Sigil:  Sigil of Awareness

Weapon Speeds:  Slow/Slow

Presence:  Blood

Notes:  FC/RI is a far superior Runeforge setup for dps in any encounter where you’re basically sitting on one target for over a full minute.  However when you get into constantly swapping targets, FC/FC becomes superior for it’s lack of needing to stack debuffs on a target.  Basically this comes down to the type of encounters you will be facing.

DW Unholy Oblit Build0/18/53

Rotations

PS – IT –  BS – BS – OB – RP  //  OB – OB – OB – RP

Priority System:  Diseases (BP > FF) > MaxRP-Dump > OB > BS > DC.  It is important to understand that Rune abilities always take priority over RP abilities.  The one exception to Rune > RP  is if you will go over your RP cap (thereby losing potential RP), then immediately fire off a RP ability.

Always keep the 2SR in mind however, as you will want to fire off DC’s and HoW between GCD’s when possible.  Don’t just RP dump at the end of a rotation.

Runeforge:  Rune of the Fallen Crusader / Rune of the Fallen Crusader

Sigil:  Sigil of Awareness

Weapon Speeds:  Slow/Slow

Presence:  Blood

Notes:  FC/RI is a far superior Runeforge setup for dps in any encounter where you’re basically sitting on one target for over a full minute.  However when you get into constantly swapping targets, FC/FC becomes superior for it’s lack of needing to stack debuffs on a target.  Basically this comes down to the type of encounters you will be facing.

Unholy 3.2 PvE DPS

Unholy has gone under some significant changes, mostly due to the nerfs to Scourge Strike and the Unholy Blight changes.  You should fully expect to see further changes to Unholy in the 3.2.1 patch simply because 3.2 Unholy breaks the “design goal” by Blizzard for Unholy spec.

Blizzard’s “design goal” for DK’s is that there should be one major F/U strike for every tree’s rotation.  Blood has Death Strike, Frost has Obliterate, and Unholy has Scourge Strike.  However Unholy will scale best with OB once you have T7/T8+ itemization, though 18%+ Armor Penetration makes it ideal.  SS will soon no longer even be used by Unholy specs unless Blizz changes something.

2H Unholy SS Build - 0/10/61

Rotations

PS – IT - BS - BS - SS - RP  //  SS - SS - SS – RP

Priority System:  Diseases (BP > FF) > MaxRP-Dump > SS > BS > DC.

Anytime your diseases are not refreshed by SS Glyph, make sure you refresh them yourself.  So long as your diseases have 2+ seconds on their duration firing off SS’s is fine.  Just be aware of your Rune CD’s and the duration left on your diseases at all times.

BP and FF diseases take priority over all other attacks.  Otherwise you can spam SS and BS, ignoring IT and PS as long as the SS Glyph is proc’ing.

Runeforge:  Rune of the Fallen Crusader

Sigil:  Sigil of Awareness / Sigil of the Vengeful Heart

Weapon Speeds:  Slow

Presence:  Blood

Notes:  Substandard to 2H OB Unholy if you have T7+ gear.  SotVH becomes the better Sigil once your AP/Spell Damage scales enough with gear to outpace the SoA benefits.  This is an itemization threshold that will be breached somewhere when you are ilvl 232+.  If you have not yet reached 20% Apr, this is the superior spec.

2H Unholy Oblit Build0/17/54

Runeforge:  Rune of the Fallen Crusader

Sigil:  Sigil of the Vengeful Heart

Weapon Speeds:  Slow

Presence:  Blood

Notes:  Don’t expect this spec to last as it breaks the design goal stated by Blizzard.  You can shift one point from Necrosis into IUP if you don’t have a speed enchant on your boots yet.  Ignoring AoE, I’m not sure if Morbidity is a better buy than Necrosis yet.

Blood 3.2 Tanking

Just like PvE DPS, Blood Tanking is pretty much the same thing as it was before.

2H Blood Tank - 52/5/14

Rotations

PS – IT - HS – HS - DS - RS/RP  //  DS - DS – HS – HS - RS/RP

Priority System:  Diseases (BP + FF) > MaxRP-Dump > DS > BS > RS > DC.  Unlike a standard dps rotation, you actually want to fire off one more Death Strike in the 2nd rotation instead of two extra HS’s.  The healing generated from DS contributes towards your TPS.

Also, Rune Strike is more of a TPS gain than DC is, so make sure that you give RS priority on RP expenditures.

Runeforge:  Rune of the Fallen Crusader (TPS) / Rune of Swordshattering (Avoidance) / Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle (If below Def cap)

Sigil:  Sigil of the Vengeful Heart (TPS) / Sigil of Deflection (Avoidance) / Sigil of the Unfaltering Knight (if below Def cap)

Weapon Speeds:  Slow

Presence:  Frost

Note:  As with all tanking specs, your raid environment will usually force you into changing your spec no matter what a cookie cutter spec says.  You may be the AoE tank, the MT, the OT, etc…  Depending on the role you need to fulfill (including debuffer/buffer) you may find moving a few talent points around beneficial.

Talents such as Improved Icy Touch, Glyphs such as Glyph of Death and Decay, and more can cause a great deal of talent point changes.  Don’t be afraid to totally change around a tanking spec if it will suit your raid needs more.

Frost 3.2 Tanking

Totally unlike Frost DW PvE DPS, you actually want to stick to a 2H build for tanking.  DW’ing causes more Boss parries, which in turn gives the boss “parry haste” meaning he will hit you more frequently.  Aka. you take more damage more frequently making it much more difficult to keep you alive.

Also all tank 1H weapons tend towards Fast, and the new DW Frost builds only favor Slow weapons.  You’d take not only more damage as a DW tank, but your TPS would suffer as well.  All in all, DW Tanks are just not viable.

2H Frost Tank - 13/51/7

Rotations

IT – PS - BS – BS - OB - RS/RP  //  OB - OB - OB - RS/RP

Priority System:  Diseases (FF > BP) > KM Rime > MaxRP-Dump > OB > BS > RS > FS.

Also, Rune Strike is more of a TPS gain than FS is (unless it is a KM FS), so make sure that you give RS priority on RP expenditures.

Runeforge:  Rune of the Fallen Crusader (TPS) / Rune of Swordshattering (Avoidance) / Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle (If below Def cap)

Sigil:   Sigil of Awareness (TPS) / Sigil of Deflection (Avoidance) / Sigil of the Unfaltering Knight (if below Def cap)

Unholy 3.2 Tanking

Unholy tanking will stay within the realm of SS no matter what simply because you will not be seeing 20%+ Armor Penetration on a tank set of gear.  Overall it plays pretty similar to current Unholy tanking.

2H Unholy Tank - 10/5/56

Rotations

IT – PS - BS – BS - SS - RS/RP  //  SS - SS - SS - RS/RP

Priority System:  Diseases (BP > FF) > MaxRP-Dump > SS > BS > RS > DC.  It is important to understand that Rune abilities always take priority over RP abilities.  The one exception to Rune > RP  is if you will go over your RP cap (thereby losing potential RP), then immediately fire off a RP ability.

3.2 PvP Specs

Sadly this is going to have to wait until some time later this afternoon at earliest.  Since I have been out of the PvP loop for so long it was my intention to simply look up the top ranked Arena teams in WoW and then relate to you guys what those specs are.  However one of the sites I like to refer to is buggin out, and on top of that the WoW Armory is currently down as well.

So I am left at a road block.  I promise I will have these up within 24 hours as long as WoW Armory comes back online.  If not, I can’t make any promises.

Keep in mind that because all DK specs have been reset (Armory is back up) – I am going to be a lil behind still on this one.  I totally did not think ahead enough to realize that all specs would be reset.  Sorry again.

Posts you should read

Best in Slot Items – This page has listings for all T7 and T8 itemization currently.  It breaks the gear down into 6 different categories depending on your current hit and expertise ratings.  Highly useful for picking your gear out from instances..

The Two Second Rule, 2SR – This page explains the mechanics behind the 2SR.  As a DK it is paramount that you understand how this mechanic works to take advantage of all of the tools you have available.

Hit and Expertise Revisted – Most people don’t actually understand how Hit and Expertise come into play for a DK.  Or even what the caps are, or what they mean to you.  Here is your post.  Caps, ratings, etc.  It’s all here.

Blood Tap – Most DK’s never use this ability, but it’s actually key to many specs.  If you have any 1 Rune special abilties in your spec such as Vampiric Blood, Ghoul Frenzy, Bone Shield, and Unbreakable Armor then you need to read this post to see how you can use BT once a minute to fire these off without messing your rotations up ever.

Death Knight Macros – I need to go back and revamp this page.  Make better headings, better names, categories, etc…  But if you don’t mind pilfering through it, it’s still got some decent macros in there to use.

Donations

Why donate?  Good question if you ask me.  Personally, it’s entirely up to you guys.  No pressure.  But as to the “Why?”

I quit WoW a lil while back when the site was peaking at 10-12k individual hits a day (not page views, individual people).  I was burnt out.  Then I came back and changed some things.  My guild, how I played, what I did with my time, etc.  And I also decided to try my hand at treating WoW like a business.  Tons of people make money off of the gaming industry.  Why not me?

The weird part?  Now that I view WoW more like a business, I’ve been having fun playing again.

So I’ve been working on developing the site, completing Best in Slot Items rankings, covering important game mechanics, etc.  Generally speaking I spend about 15-20 hours a week on the website alone.  Peak times like patch releases can push that upwards of 20 hours a week easily.  Which makes this a lot like a part time job.

While I enjoy writing, and will continue to do so, donations are more along the lines of an incentive for me to keep pouring myself into the site and developing more resources to put into the hands of my readers.  Adding in more pages, website development, specs pages, macro pages, forums, more BISI upgrades, etc…

So if you want to support my spending time into this kind of work, that would be why you might want to donate.  Donations go to me and will also help contribute to any website development I may need to pay for in the future.

Hey there SJ long time reader but never posted till now.
I have question is about sigils, I was wanting to try out DW frost DPS and is awareness really better than the XT heroic sigil?
Thanks for all the info you have provided :D

Went to bed super early and then woke up on my own at like 3am or something. Watched Inkheart, got some food (yum mexican!), and then sat down to complete this post. I promised you guys it’d be ready for today. And I plan on keeping my promises for now on. I regret that I cannot get the 3.2 PvP information atm. :(

SotVH is an odd bird. Basically there will come a breaking point in T9 itemization where you will do enough damage with FS/DC that it could eventually become better. But with the new FS nerfs, and the heavy reliance upon OB/DS, SoA is still a top end winner.

Why Awareness for Blood over SotVH? In my parses DC is usually 1-2% more of my overall damage compared to DS.

It is SotVH…

Hiya SJ!

I’ve read all comments about 3.2 Frost Tank DW and i have a question.

If i’m Hit (8%) and Expertise (26 pts) Capped, is really pointless about Dual Wield on Tanking ?

That annoyed me a little, i was preparing to change to DW because the stats of 1h swords are great compared to 2h.

Thanks in advance!

Another Question =)

Like you said, is preferable FC than Swordbreaker(4% parry) on 2H, u can tell why is ?

I know that more str equal more parry, but i can’t say the buff of 15% str is compared to 4% parry all the time.

Thanks again!

First off the main strength of DW is that the ToT talent takes strong advantage of Slow weapons. All tank 1H weapons are Fast. Secondly 26 is the Expertise cap for Dodge, not Parry. So even if you have 26 Expertise the boss will still be parrying you.

Fast/Fast tank weapons might mean that you could make up for the parry haste on the boss with the tank stats if you had 26 Expertise, but your TPS would suffer severly. And even then you couldn’t stop the fact that you would get weird burst hits from the boss due to parry haste. DW tank is not a viable spec for raid bosses.

As to tanks using FC, that is more of a TPS vs Avoidance issue. I’ll edit in the notation, but generally I make specs focused on TPS due to knowing I’ve got some killer healers backing me up when tanking. More often than not, my biggest issues have been generating enough TPS to keep my DPS’ers happy. But I realize that may not be the case for all raiders. Will fix it.

I posted this accidently in the pve unholy section, but I was wondering, it says that Improved Icy Talons would not really be used since we would use pestilence to keep diseases up. Now would that 1 point be worth being put into Killing Machine, or does the 5% perm haste it gives stack with the 20% from Icy Talons (since frost fever will keep being refreshed).

How about the sigil of Razorscale Uld 25, which gives 136 dodge after a rune strike ?

I usually use my tps very dependent on rune strike spam, that’s why i’m talking to it.

More avoidance, more Rune Strike spam, more threat, I can say that works for me until now.

Thanks again!

So, is any DPS spec coming out on top or are they all equal (assuming equal player skill/gear etc etc etc)… Just curious, I cant really tell! I am not liking the way 2h unholy dps is looking atm and trying to decide whether to stay with it when the servers come back up later.

Any ideas?

Yea thank you for all the breakdowns, they are fantastic. Would it be possible to maybe toss a little piece in there as you usually do stating which ones are the DPS leaders, 2nd place, 3rd etc etc

Hi SJ, very nice site and thanks for the info! One question… Is the post for Leveling DK (following Blood hybrid (41/13/17) still going to be a good leveling build or would you suggest something different for leveling in 3.2? Thanks again for all the great help!

I think a few people where expecting “Which one is the best?” like you had in your 3.1 spec post. I am going with 50/0/21 myself its not too different from what I am currently running with. Thanks though good job.

Improved Icy Talons: “In addition, increases your haste by 5% at all times.” Direct quote from the talent. It’s always on, and it stacks with WF/IIT. It’s a free 5% haste.

Deflection Sigil is roughly 2.6% avoidance for 5 sec until next RS. Unflatering Sigil is about 1.2% avoidance (really bad for Unholy tanks due to lack of IT’s), but gets you Def cap (unless already there). Again, this comes down to a TPS vs Avoidance issue – and your healers. And again, I err on the side of more TPS. Adjustment incoming as it’s a playstyle decision.

Which spec is doing the most damage!?!? ZOMG!?!? Hard to say just because the encounters change *everything*!! Lots of adds means it could be Frost or Unholy now with the UB nerf. Single Target, and it’s up in the air for Blood and possibly DW. We’re going to have to see how things pan out guys. So many changes and so many excounters…there is no clear winner from sims yet. So we’re testing it in game, old school.

Armor Pen is definetly better for Frost, but it’s not on Blood level by any means.

Will be getting to leveling specs soon, but not yet.

Why did you not mention the DW unholy build 0/17/54? it’s a clear contender for a dw build. It’s already viable on 3.1 patch and is only recieving buffs for 3.2. It’s even arguable that it’s better for movement encounters than DW frost since it sits in unholy presence and has death coil as its main attack.

I know I’m not SJ but with my 10/25 man naxx gear blood was the leader for me on the PTR maybe cause I’m more used to it though.

50/0/21 is far behind 51/0/20 cause DRW was buffed and UB was nerfed to under even its old single target damage along with the removal of its AoE

That said do what makes you happy if you don’t like how tight the blood rotation is or you just think dual-wielding is aesthetically pleasing then do it. Or do what your “supposed to do” and and get burnt out and quit wow cause it got boring or you had to raid too much

Bah not that its important but I meant 51/0/20. I dps for my group, and was starting to pick up pieces for a tanking offset, with the changes made to DK tanking i’m wondering if I should bother. IMO blizz really dropped the ball with DK tanking nerfs. I am not saying that we shouldn’t have been nerfed at all but they over did it, I think.

0/17/54 is competitive, but ultimately not good enough to make the cut. It does less dps than the 0/18/53, and that one already does less than the 0/53/18 spec. I see no point in listing a 3rd place spec. Also, it is not at an advantage in movement encounters specifically because it has to fit so many attacks into such a small amount of time. Movement heavy encounters are hard on that spec.

50/0/21 is *way* behind now because DRW is the bomb in its current form, and UB isn’t as tight. Plus it lacks burst capacity when you need it on many hard modes.

And np on the responses!! :) I was supposed to work today, but got my shift covered this morning when I found out 3.2 released. I wanted to be here to answer questions, fix things, etc as needed. I can’t be putting up ads and donation stuff, and then not be here when you guys need me.

I’ll be on and off the comp all day long fixing stuff, editing, and giving extra info.

I am also hoping to get into a 10 man tonight to talk about the new raid.

Hey SJ. I noticed you had something about champions online in a previous post. I was just wondering if you had heard about a game called Aion. I’ve tried the beta and I really like it. I noticed that my rotation for Frost Tanking is a lot different than the one you suggested. The rotation I generally use is:

Icy Touch – Plague Strike – Pestilence – Howling Blast – Blood Boil – RP …

And I mix in some Rune Strikes, KM Frost Strikes, Rime HB’s are they Proc…

Albeit it’s not as clean as yours, but I was wondering if you could tell me if your rotation would generate a lot more threat than mine or what the clear reason is behind your Frost Tank Rotation?

Also, just a thank you for all of the excellent information you post! Awesome job!

Quick question for when the realms come back up. I’m currently running a 12/0/59 UH Spec. Only one piece of T8 so far (Still using 4/5 t7.5). I’m wondering if i should stick with that or will the 0/10/61 be better in the new patch with my current gear level. As far as I can tell at the moment my choices are to stick with my current build, or go 0/10/61 or 51/0/20 until my ArmPen gets up and I can use an Oblit build.

August 4th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
 33

I will have some in depth posts for each spec throughout the next week or so, detailing what talent points can be swapped etc. But I don’t do guides on how to find what weapons where, in what accessibility, sorry.

I checked all WoW Head links and everything is working fine.

Nothing about Aion really impressed me. Actually I found the limiter of one race per faction quite dissapointing, though my understanding is that Aion is the most visually impressive MMO to date. Also 3 faction games tend to be weak, see DAoC.

// in a rotation represents the break in two 10 sec rotations for the entire 20 second rotation.

As far as that rotation, are you talking about a ST or AoE rotation? Because the one you mentioned sounds like an AoE, while I listed a ST Boss rotation. AoE rotations are pretty simple, and I figure people can figure those out on their own.

T7 itemization should still be using the 17/0/54 for Unholy until you get some T8 gear.

Blood plays a lot like before. Strength is the number one stat till about 6200 raid buffed AP (w/o procs). Then you want to focus on APen.

Ahh ok, Skeleton, I was referring to an AoE rotation… It’s early, i’m on a new work schedule and wasn’t thinking clearly to specify. Haha.

As far as the Runeforging is concerned, do you not think the 2% stamina buff for Stoneskin Gargoyle is worth taking over the 4% parry buff of Swordshattering? I know you said take the former if you’re not defense capped and the latter for avoidance. Is that +2% stamina really not worth factoring in on that decision, especially with the stamina reduction in the 3.2 patch?

Thanks a lot, Skeleton.

AoE rotations can vary quite a bit, and depending on whether your are tanking, or how good your tanks are at AoE snap agro, the rotations people use will change a great deal. Some Frost AoE rotations will even lead with a HB depending on the circumstances for example, FF or not.

As to Garg, if you’re lookin for tank stats I’d rather 4% avoidance myself over 2% stamina, regardless of the changes.

Frost d/w seems to be doing less damage than the blood builds. It seems to be an alternative for those who enjoy a rogue-like playstyle at the cost of slightly lower damage. I do see some frost nerfs incoming if there is a large scale miagration to frost though, since blizz basically stated that 2h is more iconic of the class and that they would rather not see the majority of us dual wielding. Of course they also said it should be a viable alternative. Go figure.

Hey Jack I’ve got a question about DW DPS. Do you feel it’s going to be absolutely required to get BIS slow weapons before speccing to frost dw pve? I love DWing on my DK and unfortunately I’m not going to be able to do it as a tank(2her for this). But I want to pick up the blue swords from Ebon Blade rep to give DW frost a shot, will that be viable over my 2h blood spec? I was avging almost 3200 dps in moderate gear as blood 2H but I really want to give DW a shot, but do not have access to the highest tier weapons yet.

Thanks for all your efforts, SJ! Donation sent.

P.S. Just to clarify – current T7 12/0/59 Unholy DK DPS users should switch over to 17/0/54 until achieving more T8 itemization?

August 4th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
 46

Frost DW has a potential of 7k dps in T9 itemization, not sure of Blood 2H. But regardless it’s all a moot point as the 2 specs are not going anywhere and Blizzard has proven they will not necessarily fix specs with dps imbalanances for months at a time.

The // is already answered – read the comments.

Best spec? No one knows honestly. Blood will hands down do awesome still as it has barely changed. Frost DW is great, but as no one probably has the right gear for it yet, it may not do too hot until you get the right gear. Unholy is going to be wonky, so no telling how it is until we get our hands dirty.

Trying out DW Frost will not require BISI before attempting it, but it will require the right gear to do equal to what you are used to. If you use blue 1H for DW when you normally do an epic 2H for other specs, you’re gonna see a drop off.

Unholy in T7 should be 17/0/54, T8 should be 0/10/61.

Sorry, did not read all the above comments, so if this is a repeat, I apologise.

In the DW Frost spec, instead of HB and FS, I removed those two points and added them to the unholy tree to get to the UB. I figured, either I can put 40 RP into a FS or a DC, so why not get a DC and a UB, which as you pointed out in an earlier post, is a fairly decent dps increase. I know you put points into this in your DW Unholy build, but I do like the power the frost tree give to OB, and since HB uses the same runes for less single target damage than OB, why waste a point there either? I can understand the nice AOE damage from HB, but considering I run with casters quite often (I know, rare right?) they can take care of the trash AOE, I’ll just toss my D&D.

This patch is indeed wonky for Unholy 2H. I’ve been a long time 0/10/61 fan, but with this patch, it seems as if that isn’t viable anymore. I hopped over on Elitist Jerks and saw the 0/17/54 Obli build for Unholy 2H and hopped on that wagon. Since today was a crazy patch day with copious amounts of lag dragging everybody down to the ground I didn’t get to raid and try it out. However, a prelim test on the dummy in TB netted me ~3.9-4k dps over 6 minutes self buffed only. Course, a dummy test never really proves anything, but it gave me an impression of actually a slight boost in dps over the previous 0/10/61 (previously around 3.7-3.8k). Hopefully I get to raid tomorrow so I have more info on that…

The DPS breakdown, according to recount (if it’s working correctly at all), actually had death coil in the lead with 21%+. Granted, I had the sigil of the vengeful heart equipped, but my death coil count was only behind obliterate by around 20% (90 dc vs 110 obl). Unholy blight was every bit as disappointing.. but at least it had an average tick of 150, which is near what I had before. Obliterate was a close second with also around 20%. What I like about this is that the DPS distribution is completely separated. It feels as if the big scourge strike hits got distributed amongst mediocre but still good death coil and obliterate hits.

Anyways, all of these are speculation from a useless dummy test, I’ll see what the real numbers are soon I hope.

All Specs have been redone in MMO’s calc. The only one that changed for sure is 2H Blood. You can swap out the NotD talent for more ghoul str/stam 3/3 (taking one more point away from Morbidity) if you prefer.

Best spec if you have terrible lag/latency is Unholy. It is the most forgiving.

If you have crap gear the starting spec for Unholy is: http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?deathknight=2305020500000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000002302003320032152003150003133151&glyph=272208010605&version=10192

Dropping FS and HB from a Frost build will drop your DPS into the trash can. You don’t have the spell power to back up DC’s to begin with, and FS is far far stronger than DC. It beats it hands down.

Also, you use a ton of OB’s in Frost, which procs Rime, which is a FREE (no runes) HB, which is the hardest hitting attack available. You proc Rime regularly on a boss, which means free HB’s. Dropping FS/HB for DC/UB is like shooting yourself in the foot for ST and AoE dmg.

Champions Online – best thing to do is go down to a Game Stop, or go to their online store, and pre-order it there. That gets you into the open beta. I don’t know the lifetime membership details yet, but I can’t afford it anyways. I am not a rich writer, heh. ;)

Test Dummy tests are crap. Always 100% pure crap. No raid buffs, debuffs, etc. It will never reflect real numbers.

Unholy OB build only beats SS if you have 20%+ APen. If not, SS wins. End of story. I did not get to use any spec in a raid yet, looking forward to tomorrow.

// has already been answered, but will do so again. Every 20 second rotation has 2 10 second segments. The “//” shows the break between the two 10 second segments of the larger 20 second rotation.

Talent builds were deleted by WoW Head, the pricks. All redone now on MMO Champion.

Ghouls are never important as a tank except to use a Death Wish for a freebie heal from time to time.

“// in a rotation represents the break in two 10 sec rotations for the entire 20 second rotation.”

Why do we need a break? Do we need to separate these two rotations with a DC or something? If not then why is there a break at all? Why not have just one 20 second rotation? How would you set these up in a macro?

Thanks :) Really love and appreciate all your hard work for us dude.

Of course test dummies will not reflect real numbers… I mentioned it in my post at least twice. What I’m seeing here is discrepancy between my previous 0/10/61 and the new 0/17/54. Even though you swap out obliterate for scourge strike the essential talents are the same, and as such the scaling shouldn’t be that far off with raid buffs and crap. To add to the obliterate 20% armor pen thing, the point of the 0/17/54, besides subbing out the nerfed scourge strike, is to gain additional runic power and as such buff death coil and unholy blight. You gain around 5/8 of a death coil per rotation. As such, even if your armor pen is below 20%, you’ll probably still see a gain from obliterate over scourge strike.

So, basically, scourge strike got nerfed, diseases got buffed. How that balances out for 0/10/61? I don’t know, but it seems as it’s not as competitive anymore. As such, we sub out scourge strike for obliterate which hits for more with 20%+ armor pen. To top it off, we have chill of the grave, which really buffs obliterate with more runic power gain and more death coil output. It’s strange, but I won’t put off the new obli spec just yet.

Not sure if it because I have been away for almost 3 months, but I could not get the dw 0/53/18 rotation to work. I think I need some hand-holding…”RP” stands for what? DC used to cap off each rotation, so tried that and then switched to FS. Nothing worked and what I mean by this is I was lucky if I could get off one OB before everything was on cd. I could never complete one rotation. I would lead off with BT too. Before I left WoW, all rotations posted here worked for me. Please tell this born-again noob what I’m missing? Regards – Pwn

@pwnisher — It’s ok man, sometimes we all take breaks, I will try and break it down for you.
Set-up Rotation
This is your first 6 rune uses. IT-PS-Pest-BS-OB. IT ans PS to get your Diesease up, then you use Pest(you use this now to refresh both to 20 sec this is IMPORTANT so that your diesease won’t drop off before you Pest again). At this point fire off a couple FS(Frost Strikes) as it is your main RP=Runic Power dump.
The second 6 runes is OB-OB-OB. Then FS again.
Now you first rotation is over and you get into the main rotation.(Note if for some reason you diesease drop-off return to this rotation).
Main Rotation
The first 6 runes are OB-Pest-BS-OB. This order is IMPORTANT and probably your main problem. You MUST use Pest on the first Blood Rune that comes up. This is very tight on time vs your dieseases dropping off. Then again FSs.
The next 6 runes are OB-OB-OB. Then FSs.
repeat.

So these are your two rotation you need to know to run this spec. There is a lot other things you will need to do to make this spec successful but, this is a start. Once you get this down you can start by adding other things. Remember, the jist of the spec is to get off as many OB are you can(using pest to renew giving you another OB in your rotation that has blood runes not death runes) and using the down time to fire off things like Rime procs.
Hope this was helpful.

@Mort – Thanks for the reply. I think what it is this – I used to be a lazy but very successful DK. On my large monitor I never paid attention to runes or what had proc’d, I simply clicked through my rotations as each ability presented itself and I ALWAYS topped the dps chart. It was easy and fun. I expected the same in my return but couldn’t do anything last night to make it through one rotation. So we do not lead off with HB, UA or BT? Do I need to adopt and master some add-ons to be successful? Coming back to WoW at the same time as 3.2 was overwhelming to say the least and to set my SJ rotation like I always had and not have it work…it was as close to feeling impotent as I can ever imagine! I desperately need some WoWagra!!!

My first post ever on any site…
Skeleton Jack…dear sir…truly incredible work here. Being the new class on the block is always an uphill climb. Thanks to your efforts, we have a chance at succeeding regardless of the constant medical experiments the scientists at Blizzard subject us to.

Your site is now the primary reference for me, and those I admin in our guild.

I switched to the frost DW yesterday. My DPS did drop slightly..probably due to lack of familiarity and improper gear. I have a blend of 7 and 7.5 tier, with 2 naxx one handers (Widows fury and hatestrike). This maintained a steady 3k dps in heroics. Buffs were simply dragonfin fillet and pally Might (HoW also..of course). Different weapons, and the new gear to come (as well as familiarity), should easily see this jump trough the roof.

…suffer well…

I put in the WP Super Cache and now my site is fucked. Seriously not happy. The main page will not fucking update at all.

Frost DW will work with any weapon setup, but without 2 slow/slow 1H weapons you are nerfing yourself.

10 second breaks are represented because of rune cd’s. It’s pretty simple. Do macros however you like.

No, if your APen is below 20% you will not. You forget to include all talents and all damage sources in your equations. It’s not a closed environment comparing just two attacks. It’s every other talent given up as well, and how all of it scales together. It’s group package.

The new OB spec is fine and works well, but it is gear dependent. If you’re in T9 content, it shouldn’t be terribly difficult to restat yourself.

APE values for haste, crit, armor pen, etc will be at least a week or two coming minimum while gear sets, stats, specs, and more are tested by the community.

Gemming APen for an OB Unholy builds will nerf your DPS. It’s not Blood where APen is the bomb. It’s a matter of getting new gear with Apen on it, and then making the jump. APen is worth just a lil more than half of what Strength is worth to Unholy. Do not gem out Apen for Unholy.

Always use Runeforge’s for your weapons, never enchants. We got the best toys in game.

RP stands for Runic Power, or Runic Power dump. This means you spend your RP on whatever special ability you have, such as Death Coil or Frost Strike.

The Pestilence rotation is very tight. If you have MS/lag issues then it may not work well for you. You can always ignore the Pest rotation and use the normal one listed there instead.

As to add ons I recommend using RuneWatch and Tell Me When, both can be found on curse.com easily. This will manage your procs like Rime/KM and your Rune CD’s in a very easy manner. HIGHLY recommend both of these mods.

Blood is an amazingly tight and difficult rotation. It is not easy and if you have latency/lag issues it may be impossible for you. You never use BS as a Blood spec.

SJ, I need some guidance. I know that you have addressed unholy dk’s in T7/7.5 gear, indicating that 17/0/54 is the way to go. However, i have a healthy mix of ilvl 219 gear (6 or 7 pcs) that put me at the 20% for armor pen. I have no T8 gear yet. Should i stay with the 17/0/54 build or would i get better dps using the unholy oblit build?

With only 0/10/61 and 0/17/54 in mind, what we are missing through the transition is basically 3/3 Outbreak, 1/5 Necrosis, 1/1 scourge strike, and 2/2 iUP. The major downfall would be the 2/2 iUP since I’m a sucker for run speed, but you could always take 2 points out of desolation for it. Considering Outbreak only buffs your scourge strike and plague strike, it could really be negligible. Instead you gain 3/3 annihilation and 2/2 chill of the grave, which gives you 25 extra runic power every rotation (and a meager 3% crit on melee specials, meh). The 2 extra points spent to get CoTG is really neligible too. Yes, you shift talent points around, but what’s really being affected is runic power generation and your main strike. Like you said, how this balances out is up to question, but I have some suspicion that it’s… not that far off. Mentioning that obliterate will win out scourge strike even below 20% ArP isn’t just a random assumption, seems that the guys at elitist jerks have given it calculation with the extra RP and it might be true, it’s page 41 of their unholy dps thread.

These have not been posts to discredit your findings btw. You’ve done a great job and everyone appreciates it. I’ve just taken interest in the Unholy Obli build since I hate stacking ArP for blood and also dual wielding. I’m also not saying 0/17/54 is the winner, but it’s probably not a bad substitute for the 0/10/61 people out there… until they nerf obliterate and buff scourge strike.

Any validity to people going on about DW frost being the end all dps spec? I have heard people going on about it on the WoW forums with little to nothing to substansiate that claim. I also don’t think thier has been enough time to test that. I don’t really put too much merit in forum posts though. Has anyone been able to test any of this out with real tests, and numbers? Thanks.

0/17/54 is the winner actually, beating out the SS build. But only after you hit 20% Apen. Keep in mind my gear is pretty solid, but not BISI, and it already as like 13-14% Apen on it. Reaching the 20% mark won’t be hard to do without trying.

As to the best DPS build, not sure yet. Sims can only tell you so much. That’s part of the fun of Live!! :) Out the gate it’ll probably be Blood. Then as people improve on DW specs and gear, I think DW might take the lead or tie for it personally.

UB is a passive ability. There is no more using it.

I have given up on the site for now until Creep gets back to me. Basically everything is so beyond me at this point, and so messed up, that I refuse to possibly mess it up more myself because of ignorance. Hopefully within the next 24 hours she’ll have everyhing sorted out.

Unholy is the least gear dependent, while Blood/DW are the most gear dependent.

DW appears to scale better than any current spec, but Blood appears to have the talent edge. I think those 2 will be the lead runners. However, once Unholy peeps have enough gear to gear out “Unholy style”, but still have 20% APen as well, there is no telling what will happen then. The new OB Unholy build is promising to shake a lot of conceptions up.

SJ, I’ve been reading your site for quite some time now. I have a big question that I just can’t seem to figure out why this?
the 0/10/61 spec is nice, but my question is why go from 17/0/59 to the 0/10/61? Why give up the bladed armor and everything else from the blood tree to go over to the frost tree to get more RP, and an extra 10% frost and shadow dmg? I kinda see why…the 10% adds on to the DoTs (which now tick 15% more) and I guess it kinda makes up for the 5% loss on SS. Are my assumptions right? Are we going to the frost tree to regain what we lost from the slight nerfs.
Another question is…is the 17/0/59 spec still viable in your opinion.

Hey SJ! The info and insight you provide is quite thorough and very helpful. I was wondering if you have an update on PvP builds. I was a 0/17/54 Unholy build beforehand and was curious if this still scales well. Also, my other spec is an Unholy tanking spec and was curious as to if Desecration / Anti-Magic Shell / UB is worth getting, with me being an OT/AoE in raids and a MT in heroics of course.

We went in and did the first Tournament raid boss tonight and found them to be extremely simple and easy. The first fight for melee is a tank and spank, the second fight requires switching targets and getting rid of debuffs similar to the twins in Sunwell (not as crazy). The third just requires you to gtfo of Dodge.

First phase, a tank and spank, I managed to maintain 6.5k, which is a significant upgrade over what I’ve done in a single target fight. 22% of my damage came from DC, with 4.3k hits and 9k crits. 19% is from obliterate, with 4k hits and 7k crits. 18.8% is from melee. The diseases were also really really buffed, doing on average 1.2k ticks and stealing 8% total damage PER disease. This pretty much shows the DC spamfest with CoTG. I also happened to have a same-level geared blood DK with me (with a lot of armor pen so is well itemized). He managed to reach over 7k in burst but leveled at 6.2-6.4k. Conclusion? This spec could be very competitive afterall, and should do well over 7k in t9 itemization.

This was all done in t8.5 items, no 25 hard mode items but includes 10 hard mode items with 12% armor pen.

Hi, I’ve been a fan of your site for some time now, my first time posting.

I’d like to know, how far behind is Unholy SS compared to Unholy Obliterate build? Suppose I did have the ArP to make the Oblit build, but I prefer the play style of using SS instead of Oblit, does my DPS really suffer terribly?

Also, do you think that the SS spam nature of using Glyph of SS makes up for the increased power of the Oblit build, or was that already factored in?

Lastly, say we take the best 2H Unholy build (Oblit) vs Blood – does Blood single target DPS far outclass Unholy, or is it too early to tell?

All of the above assuming 4-piece tier 8 and mostly 226 i-level stuff.

I am going to provide a review of the Unholy tanking spec I tried last night.

It was 2H Unholy Tank – 10/5/56
http://talent.mmo-champion.com/?deathknight=0050320000000000000000000000005000000000000000000000000002052300350030102033050203133151&glyph=220804060501&version=10192
—————————————————————————————-
Alright, first off the spec….
I found this on SkeletonJack.com and was interested to give it a shot. To be fair I made a few changes for synergy and nessesity.

The first change is that I have never had a problem with threat so I see no reason to have a gargoyl as a tank doing extra dps. That saved me one point.

I really like the idea of the improved Unholy Presence so I get run speed buff even in Frost Presence, especially in Uld. However, I have the shoe enchant and they stack so I decided to only grab one point there instead of two.

I also picked up Anti Magic Zone bubble thing because whether I am OT or MT I feel like I get great use out of the talent. As an OT I pop it when I see I can help the MT or keep some melee safer. As a MT its some more spell mitigation which is always nice.

I believe the last change was that I placed my remaining points into Improved Icy Touch. This is for two reasons, (1.) Most importantly I asked and no one in my raid team uses anything that will override the slowed attack speed. Things that would do that are like Thunderclap, some druid thing and some rogue thing. Thus I know it will remain up 100% of the time and also (2.) I never Plague Strike because in this spec you don’t have to so its nice to have Icy Touch hit a tiny bit harder.
—————————————————-The Day 1 Review

1. The single target threat was suprisingly good, I consistantly ran either #1 or #2 in Threat among our tanks as sometimes our Pally was pulling 9k TPS which was freaking dumb.

However in AOE situations I could really feel the lack of the old Unholy Blight mechanic.

On the other hand I had more Runic Power than I knew what to do with and since Deathcoil now puts Unholy Blight on things as a 20% damage dot I would tab target and do that to all the mobs and it helped…even though is was a lot more work.

2. Other than the major change with the Deathcoil it felt solid enough. Last night is an okay judge but at the same time everyone’s UI was most likely messed up and no one could have possibly been on their game right after a patch like this.
—————————————————–So How Does the Nerf Stick Feel??

Well I tell you what, okay I lost like 4% health which sucked a whole lot and ofcourse Ice Fort is now on 2Min cooldown which means I cannot just pop it whenever I feel like it anymore and in Uld it might mean tank switching here and there…

BUT the buff to parry was very noticable. I could tell a great deal that at my gear level, since I had not yet fully stacked Dodge (I’m just over 26% unbuffed), that the boost in parry came out as a buff for me. My Avoidance overall felt higher.

Does this mean I am less of an EH tank and more of a tank dependent on some RNG, sure I guess but really it just put DKs in a better line with the other tanking classes.

Mate, been trying out various builds over the last 2 days and I think you may be missing a trick with the new UB’s buff to DC. Not claiming this is a record beater for dps but it is, tbh, easy and fun! Rotation is as you would expect for blood, with DC s for RP and the UB glyph (with Dark Death and DS).

Hello Jack!
First off here Thank you for the hard work and love your site.
Ok so i am wondering about hit cap on DK DW frost now i am at 9% hit 26exp. What should i really be at for DW frost? I have read all the link and it really isn’t clear where i guy should or shouldn’t go DW.
I have a good 2 hander and OS blood 2h build “yours” :P
But what i am really asking is with those stats should i put the DW away for now till i get closer to hit cap or am i safe to raid with DW frost over 2h blood?
Also is dw frost out dpsing blood 2h or no?
I am far from the guy that won’t change i want what is best for my raid if i am able to pull more with DW that is what i going to do if i should be staying blood so be it.
Last thing you should know is my 2h is better than my 1h but not by alot.

Thanks jack

When you’re writing down a rotation, it really helps some of the less knowledged players to fill in the open GCD spots in the rotation. For example:
IT PS BS BS _ Obl
_ Obl _ Obl _ Obl
Now players understand where they have time to fill in the FS/HB/HoW, and when they need to take the 2SR in to account. This is the best system we have so far and is way better than saying “Obl Obl Obl (RP dump)” which would not inform the player that they actually have a whole GCD worth of time between those Obliterates.. It’s just something you should consider doing in the future. I really hate how everyone uses EJ word as law and dumps RP at the end of each 10 sec cycle thereby losing a great deal of dps time..

I have ditched my secondary spec (blood) in favor of testing the 0/17/54 Oblit build. When I first tried it on the dummy yesterday, my DPS wasn’t as high as my 0/10/61 build, but it could be that the rotation just has me off. I know that my gear level is fine for it – all T8, if not BiS. My ArPen is only 15.75% and maybe that’s part of it but if even T7 gear works for the Oblit build, it must be my rotation that’s causing the failure.

Hey guys. I am trying out the DW dps a lot, and I have to say it is a ton of fun, and great to be doing something totally different than I was before.
Quick question on the weapons. My main hand I am using razorscale talon which I think is a 2.5 or a 2.6 which is good bc it is slow.
On the offhand though I am using the sword from Iron Council 10 man which is like 1.6 speed so it is fast.
I guess my issue is, the fast weapon is like 163.2 dps on the tooltip, and I could find a slower weapon for like 140something dps tooltip, but higher max damage. Would I want something like that over the Ulduar 10 weapon just because it is slower?
Also could someone recommend a weapon from Ulduar 10 or higher that I could be looking for in addition to razorscale talon?
Thanks a lot!

Blood spec ( 51/0/20) and UH presence

This is my “problem”, everything i ever read says to use blood presence with my blood spec that i got from here, but i would like som1 with 25 ulduar gear to try this out. I do 4k+ on heroic bosses with blood spec and in UH presence, and if i try blood presence, i usually only do 3k+, i understand heroics are shorter fights than raids so you have to consider the burst factor with unholy, that is why i just did 5 minute test on target dummy. My result was blood starting kind of low and rising to a steady 2600 dps, my UH presence (blood spec) started pretty high, around 3k dps and dropped slowly to a steady 27-2800 dps….. so i can not find out why to do blood presence. Maybe i’m doing something wrong, but when i do almost 5k dps in heroics on bosses without ever gearing from any 10 or 25 mans, i think i’m doing something right. so maybe blood spec, UH presence is the new thing, i don’t know, som1 test it out for me and let me know your results, same rotation pretty much… and also with the DW spec that i’ve noticed, it’s better dps as a base, but doesn’t have much u can do besides a rotation, so if u take the dancing rune weapon ability from blood, that makes blood spec still higher dps (for me at least), anyways not worried bout that, any help would be appreciated, thanks a lot!

Hi SJ nice work here…
Have some questions for u or anyone who test DW frost spec…
I notice that Unholy presence kick out Blood presence in some instances(@ least my recount show me that stat) and also I use F/F weapon instead of S/S have no more than 1 sec drop of RP or RA if I notice some 2-3sec drop blood tap or Empower Rune Weapon back me ingame. Here is link of my armory( I know it is sucky ^^): http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Xavius&n=Kosmar
I know that much depenency is in items that ppl use but still don`t get point of benefits S/S weapons instead of F/F weapons.
Today I go training ground to test BP and UP on dummy( boss and regular), we will se what recount can say.

No DnD on tanking rotations? That doesn’t make sense. DnD and Rune Strike are the only two high threat moves that DK tanks have. Having tanked most of the game as a DK I would recommend adding that into the rotations. With the rotations you have set a 5k dpser is gonna grab aggro from you like candy from baby. DnD and Rune Strike are essential for any DK tank.

Hi Jack,
Some corrections and clarifications on the tanking builds.

1) In general, DK tanks should always take Imp Icy Touch because (a) we can apply its melee-haste reduction more easily than any other tank (b) if you do not have it, you rely on a warrior doing it for you which doesn’t make sense on most bosses.

Most DK tanks consider Imp Icy Touch mandatory along with the 5/5/5 talents.

2) Parry-haste is largely a non-issue and has been solidly proven on TankSpot and Deathknight.info; it was an issue in the old days but WotLK removed crushing blows which were the real thing to avoid. A DW tank with 21+ expertise will only see a tiny bit more incoming parry damage than a 2H tank.

3) The unholy tank spec is missing some very important talents (Impurity, AMZ) and has a fairly useless one (Imp Unholy Aura).

3) Bladed Armour is awesome for tanks, and many consider it mandatory. With Frost Presence, the armour x AP multiplier on tank gear is massive. I haven’t checked the maths (yet), but suspect it’s probably better than 5/5 Desolation you’d put in the Unholy tank spec.

I’ve posted on my site the template 3.2 tank specs.

Hey Gravity, I’m reading your post on DK.info and some of your logic seems to be off in regards to DW tanking… number one, Frost strike can now be dodged, parried, and blocked

” – because you are attacking faster, you get to use a higher proportion of your rune strike opportunities than a 2Her tank. A 2H speed of 3.4 makes it possible for you to dodge a boss’ attack twice within that window, but because RS works on next melee swing, you will only get to use one of those two opportunities. In constrast, a DW tank will get to use more of their RS opportunities with their 2.5 attack speed.”

I’ve never seen a situation where I get more than maybe two Rune Strikes in a row, and I’m very well geared so you won’t be using mostly Rune Strike at all. And also when Rune Strike is queued I’m pretty sure the second dodge will allow you to use another one.

“A DW tank with 21+ expertise will only see a tiny bit more incoming parry damage than a 2H tank.”
As a tank your job is to reduce the damage coming to you as much as possible, why would you willingly increase it at great risk?

And moving from the factual to circumstantial, DW tanking from what I’ve seen is just not even close to 2h tanking. Freeing up 25 pure defense that you don’t have to gem/chant for and 2% stamina is wonderful, and since hit rating is fairly low on alot of the tanking gear out there your TPS as a DW tank would be terrible at best.

And to SJ, can you show any numbers that show Bloodworms eating AOE healing? I’ve NEVER seen them cause ANY healer grief in a raid, usually if they take any damage it one shots them so I dont understand what AOE-heal they could “eat”.

Can some of you guys read my post (#113) above here and see if ya’ll get the same results i did? I am trying to find a good reason everyone says to use blood presence with my blood spec, while I blow blood pres dps out of the water when i use unholy presence with my blood spec.

To Galeron: DRW is way better dps than unholy blight, i’m guessing you have 50 points into blood and trying 21 into unholy for UB. DRW is not something you want to give up if you are blood spec. that is 17 seconds of 50% extra dmg. And when you have 2 or more targets, ur dps is crazy. Pop your trinkets and hysteria before you hit DRW, so that your DRW gets those buffs also. Whatever buffs you have active when you pop ur DRW, it gets those buffs too. If you time it right, u can get all death/blood runes and get 6-8 heart strikes in a row, and doing that with DRW out is amazing.

I’m actually getting the hang of it and doing relatively well in my Uld 10 group.

However I’m worried about losing additional runic power generation from breaking the set because the build seems to hinge on rapid-fire deathcoils…

@Cotopaxi, it’s a big debate mate, as you no doubt know, which has been done to death on tankspot (that’s the best maths analysis on parry-haste), so let’s not get into it here. Suffice to say, your counterpoints have been handled in those threads and the risk you take is very marginal. Here’s one thread http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f14/42619-dual-wielding-dks-demystifying-myth-6.html#post147743

Personally, I wouldn’t DW tank anyhow because of the Stoneskin runeforge.

Re Rune Strike: you cannot queue them. If you have one proc, you need to use it before the next can be activated, which is gated by your melee swing speed.

I know I already asked you this but I just wanted to make sure my little question is seen.
If you simply have Deadly Gladiators PVP gear, which spec would be best?

For the Unholy 2H SS build, I put two points in Subversion instead of Improved Unholy Presence. I’m obviously not using Unholy Presence, and the run speed increase seems worthless to me, so I’d rather buff BS crit chance and more importantly, reduce my chance to overpower the tank’s threat. Much better choice, imo.

Actually the only available talents I wouldn’t pick over IUP are NoCS, Icy Reach, Unholy Command and Desecration.

I think the third point of Morbidity would amplify the new Unholy Blight too, wouldn’t it?

SJ,

I have followed your website for some time, and really appreciate all the work you put in! prior to 3.2 I was using the 50/0/21 UB Build for my Blood DPS spec, it seemed to work very well for me. I do have one question though. Your rotation then (and now) shows on the 2nd half, that you fire off 4 HS. When i am running in 25man, I sometimes can fit in 5, or often even 6 HS in before my diseases tick off and then dump my RP. Occasionally though, my RP will max out before the last 1 or 2 hit, and I feel like I am wasting that possible half DC for the next rotation. Am I better off to only do 4 HS, and continue with an RP dump afterward, even if I have 3-4 seconds left up on my diseases? I think the spell haste is what lets me get the extra strikes in, as my IT and DCs fire off very quickly.

Thanks!

SJ,

I have a question that quite a few of DK’s have been wondering on my server.

I have your 51/0/20 blood 2hander spec, and every site on the web says to use blood presence. My question for you is why is that better than unholy presence?

I know everything says “We are dk’s, we hit hard. Use blood presence”, but i stomp dps in UH presence. usually 500-1k dps less if i go blood presence.

‘ – Some things that i have done – ‘

(Keep in mind that i have no 10 man or higher gear. I only have few emblem gear, heroic gear, and few items from 5 man H-ToC)

1. 25 man VoA emalon – Started the fight (uh pres) and i was up to 7.5k dps until we started switching to kill adds that were overcharged. and dropped down to 5400 by the end of the fight (top dps in raid). Most people in there had ulduar gear. The other dk (ulduar gear) was asking me my spec/rotation because he saw my crap gear.

2. Test dummie – simple short version = blood presence got me around 2900-3100 (with proc spikes up to 3500ish) //// uh presence got me up to 33-3400 (spikes up to over 4k+).

Basically i’ve tested it out in a lot of heroics, and raids. I always do way more with UH presence.

So if you can help me out and see if i’m doing something wrong, or if I just found out what is getting nerfed next.

Thanks a lot. Your site is awesome by the way.

p.s. Sorry if my english isn’t the best.

You dont discuss hybrid DK’s. A friend of mine is running a 44/0/27 DK and claims he is getting high dps since he has the perm ghoul and does not let his RP drop below 50%. What is your thought?

Hey SJ, I don’t know if you realized this now, but if you go back to WoWhead for a ptr and use their calculator and then they switch over to live you can just edit the url and replace the ptr. at the beginning with www. and still have the talent set ups.

For example

http://ptr.wowhead.com/?talent#jfcrZMhezArcofucuzAoc:kaNMVm

goes to

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#jfcrZMhezArcofucuzAoc:kaNMVm

Hi,

Great to finally read something useful on 3.2. Thanks a lot for that.

I have a question about the DW frost spec.

In the early days DnD and HB where standard in the rotation. Now i only see OB in the rotation.

Just to be sure i understand. In this build u use HB only on Rime procs? and no DnD.

thnx in advance

Hey, I’m not sure if this was mentioned at all in the many comments, I started reading them, but there was waaay to many. ;P
In the last patch I was 17/0/54. And Is Losing the extra crit and AP from blood and and putting it in the frost tree to make the 0/10/61 build you ahve listed as the SS build, really worth it?

Your blood build for tanking. 4 points in necrosis??
U should be runestriking alot which removes your white dmg (to a certain extent) making this ability not worth having.
2 points in Imp blood presense to increase heals from death strikes and 10% more healing from your healers.
No mark of blood??? gain 4% of total health each time hit for 20 seconds
5 points in blood gorged as well? unless your having issues with threat you can get more surivability from taking imp rune tap for those 10k zomg i just got smashed occasions.

Am i just completely off track here, but it seems as though all the abilities that are “tank” abilities in blood have been skipped.

Jack Im a bit confused about a fewskill pints in the above posted 0/10/61 Unholy spec.
Wouldnt the three points used in improved unholy prez. & boneshield be better used elsewhere to gain some DPS? I really dont understand putting poins in Improved unholy prez. if the spec calls for blood prez. Am I missing something? Im trying to get the most I can out of my Dk and Im doing ok but am always open to learning something. Just wondering?

Hello there! :)

I really REEEALLY enjoyed and liked what I have read so far here. It really helped me to get my dps up :)

But it was some time that you published this awesome guide/info. And you wrote that you were going to come back to us about the PVP speccs in 3.2. You even promised ;D But I haven’t seen them published. Will you get to those later? Or am I just too stupid/tired/complitly idiotic to see that you have already published or made a remark about not publishing them somewhere on the site?

Hope you will!
Love to hear from you soon. :)

SJ,

Thanks for the fine web site, which I’ll be using later tonight to fine tune my DK. Incidentally my DK is DW/FROST for raiding and with OK gear (some T7.5, some 245 pvp gear, etc) I was able to single pull 3300 DPS on a single target. On multi targets, well over 5k.

My concern is that my rotation sucks. I noticed the other DW/FROST DK was pulling consistently 4.5-7k DPS. When I checked recount I noticed that she was using obliterate a lot. Probably generating more death runes than me. She has slightly better gear so I know it’s my rotation. I need to check her spec and see what’s different. I am blood/frost spec (17/54 I think). She may be FR/UH spec for all I know.

Right now I am PVPing as UH but may try FROST to see how it works out. I have 232 and 226 level weapons (Maces) and I see a lot of white damage.

Kynn

PS: Please update the PVP specs/info :)

Great blog man, I dig the back and forth interaction. My issue is a post from you (Blog 63)

“Test Dummy tests are crap. Always 100% pure crap. No raid buffs, debuffs, etc. It will never reflect real numbers.”

Test dummies are essential to measure baseline DPS, they are critical because they eliminate variables such as raid buffs, debuffs and random event occurences. As a successful guild leader for the past 4 years. I would never consider an applicant to my guild without first observing him/her on a test dummy. It is the first thing I do after an armory gear check.

Don’t be so hard on the dummies bro, they need love too.

SJ:
I do believe that over all the best dps spec is the frost/ blood spec. The 0/53/18 has a limited strike return during the 2sr rule. Allowing cool downs to generate auto-attacks the dps rate under the unholy spec does not boed well for the strength increase that you get from the blood talent. Your thoughts??

Hey jack, i am playing dw frost and putting out some sweet numbers, what i am thinking about is how far on the hit % i kan go before loosing towards the stacking of str. i am expertise capped and are at 10% Hit. Should i lay low on the hit and stack up str or shall i continue try to coper as mutch white hits as possible?=)

Thanks on prehand

Have seen some well geared DK’s going back to the 16/0/55 or 17/0/54 unholy build and doing monster damage. This seems to only work for very well geared DK’s. Have you looked at this at all? If you look at wowmeteronline all the top DK’s seem to be back to unholy now using some variant of this spec.
