Heya guys!!  Lots to talk about, especially the Chinese gold farmers, snicker.  For the details you can read here.  But lets not forget about things like the new DW talents and more for DK’s!!

Chinese Gold Farmers

Pretty much every MMO company out there has figured out that it’s nearly impossible to beat down those cochroaches known as the “chinese gold farmer”, but it seems there is a new big boy on the block willing to take a swing.  China itself.  Heh.

If you read any site about WoW, outside of blogs, you’ve probably already heard about this.  But we’re gonna give you some facts, and then point something out I don’t really see anyone else mentioning.  But before then, you can also refer over to a study on Real-World Production in Developing Countries for the Virtual Economies of Online Games if you really wanna.

So, the skinny of the deal is that chinese gold farming contributes roughly 80%+ of the virtual gaming economy in the world.  This business brings in over a $100 million+ per year, and it’s growing at a rapid pace.  And China thinks they can monkey stomp it…heh.

Anyone remember when everyone went after Napster?  Or how all of the companies are going after Torrent sites for pirated movies?  Or any other similar occurance?  Sure, you ended up seeing some companies fall.  Some people will go out of business.  But in the end you can still download music for free off of the internet.  And you can still download movies for free as well.

While I firmly support the abolishment of “gold farmers” as it detracts from any gaming experience, I would be shocked to see this new law have any long term impact on the MMO gaming experience.

DK’s Dual Wielding

Let the DW diehards rejoice, their time has come.  Maybe…

It’s still far too early to see how well DW is going to perform as the only tests that can really be done atm are on test dummies.  Few guilds are running Ulduar/Naxx runs just to let DK’s get some testing in, ya know?  While the future is promising, we’ll still have to wait and see.

But as this is the new “big deal” I promise to stay as much on the cutting edge as possible to let you guys know what is going on with the newest iteration of DW DK’s.

BISI

Well, BISI for T8 content is fairly well behind all considered, but then I also did quit WoW for some time.  It’s coming along however (already half way done), and will be finished in under 2 weeks maximum.

As to the T9 content, I had hoped to actually have this prepared and ready immediately when the new information was released.  However due to the changes to Unholy and Frost this will not be possible.  However it is my goal to have T9 content BISI posts done ASAP.

What is a Hero Class?

Death Knights are now being defined by Blizzard as a melee hybrid class.  This means that they will be directly compared to Druids, Paladins, Shaman, and Warriors in many respects (all have a melee dps build/spec).  It appears that their opinion of DK’s is that they should not break any rules and fit solidly into pre-existing molds.

So it is becoming apparent that the “Hero Class” feature is meant to be nothing more that a higher starting level, cool class quests/starting zone, improved leveling gear, and not much more.

If you were to ask me (which by reading here, I’m assuming you did ;P), a Hero Class should be defined as…

Hero Class:  A class which falls under the definition of “pure” or “hybrid”, yet can still cross currently held barriers without becoming “OP” or “broken”.  Examples include casters who can melee, AoE’ing while doing other actions (ex. Death and Decay), healing and doing damage at the same time, and more.  While these classes are not intended to be the most powerful, they can do things outside of the accepted norm.

While this was at the core concept of DK’s from the get go, as every patch passes we become less and less of this ideal dream.

Well..it was good while it lasted hehehe…..
I guess the whiney 12 yr old kids in the official wow forums didnt like the fact that they couldnt beat a dk and therefore…we get the nerf :)
Unfortunatly, thats the way i think a lot of thre major decision in wow are made these days.

perhaps we need to pretend to be 12 yr old kids and get in those forums and fight back :)

As soon as the heavy nerfing begun (about 3 or 4 months ago), I’ve been doing a little bit of “census” in my mind, asking players why they roll a DK as their mains and listening to people’s comments on this matter. I’ve come to the conclusion that near 40% of players (DKs) will NOT go back the their previous chars (like me, I’ll never go back to my mage, hunter, druid or warrior) so I’m guessing that Blizzard WILL notice about 10% ~ 12% of thir customers leaving.

As for me, I’ll just sit down and relax doing maaaybe the same DPS as a half-geared hunter (me having a VERY good Ulduar gear) until they realize the’y done something stupid and level us again to the top damage dealers in the list. Or maybe I’ll keep respecing until I finally beat the DPS out from those shammans by trying eeevery single possibility in mind (that’s where YOU SJ come in my game). Who knows, meybe they will make a new archievement called “You know about respecing your DK” which I’ll get when I reach the 10K gold doing that.

First things first. Your blog is an excellent resource and I visit it regularly, the work you do is indespensible and I appreciate your contribution to our community. I am about to disagree with you on a key point, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t have a tremendous amount of respect for you as a DK and a blogger. You rock, sir.

You asked “What is a hero class?” and while your answer was well thought out, I disagree with it on a fundamental level.

A hero class was never supposed to be more powerful, or more different(er!), or more able or more unique than any other class.

A “Hero Class” is called that because it is based on a PAST HERO from the Warcraft franchise. For example, we know that Deathknights are based on Arthas, post-conversion-to-evil in Warcraft 3.

They aren’t called Hero classes for any other reason than the one stated above. With that said, they ought to be balanced against the other classes currently in the game. No more or less good, just balanced.

The other point you make is that they ought to be more unique because they are a Hero class, and that Blizz has moved them in a less unique direction. I don’t disagree with the latter portion of this point, but I think it’s because Blizzard realized that their original vision for Death Knights was Waaayyyyy too ambitious. If you remember, the FIRST announcement at Blizzcon called for a new weapon type (“Runeblades”) and a skill that would allow you to swap out the TYPES of runes that the weapon had.

The move towards a static 2/2/2 rune system, Runic power, and all the other changes they’ve made in the last year, weren’t about making them “the same”, they were about making them “functional”. If we’d waited for “Runeblades” and the “Runeforging” skill that they had originally envisioned, the class would STILL be in development.

To your complaint about them being considered a “Hybrid” class, at this point any class that can fill two roles is considered hybrid. For instance; paladins and shaman are “hybrid” classes.

Is this a bad thing? Paladin tanks generate more threat and take less damage than any other tanks in the game. Elemental shaman consistently top the DPS meters in every sort of encounter. Paladin and Shammy healers are the most sought after in all of WoW.

Being a hybrid class (We can tank and DPS, therefore we are one, it’s not up for debate) doesn’t make us any less good at either of those roles, and even if it did, it wouldn’t make us any less of a “hero” class.

Finally, to the guy complaining about not keeping up with DPS on half geared hunters, unless you’re talking about absolutely top tier (Ulduar 25) gearing, which is a level of play that I have not experienced, I have to point out the fallacy of your comment.

I’m consistently in the top slot for my Ulduar 10 group. On Emalon the other night I put up 3.5k dps in mostly Naxx10 gear. I’ve got Warlocks who outgear me and do less damage than I do. If a “Half geared hunter” is outdamaging you, you’re probably doing it wrong.

SJ, back to you…Though I disagree with your point about heroics, I just want to underscore how much I appreciate this blog, and everything you do for the community. You are the man, no doubt about it. We actually talked about the DK nerfs in a podcast I recorded this week, I hope you’ll give it a listen: http://www.greyhats.com/2009/06/30/the-last-frontier-podcast/

Suffer well, brother.

my one question (alright, I’m lying, I have hundreds) is why can’t we dual wield 2 handed weapons like warriors? I mean, come on, we are suppose to be uber, scarey, and smell better than all the other classes combined. I can still get feared by a priest (which doesn’t make much sense since we smell better and haven’t found that trinket yet). I left behind my huntress for a DK (that looks obscene) and never look back. As far as builds, I will prob go 51 in blood, then a little here and a little there, swinging a single 2-handed weapon still….

I think I’m just goiind to go bury my head in RL for a while and see what kind of mess I come back to in a few months. I’m tired of trying to catch up with the curve, so maybe I’ll just say screw it and watch it all burn down around me. ;)

rofl, the faction change is a reality, theyve nearly got it in action…

i agree, the game is bein dumbed down on a daily basis, but id also have to argue that ulduar is alot of fun….. and hope the new 5man and raids are put together with the same level of quality if not even better….

mimiron is one of my fav fights to date, finally something to beat the oldschool Onyxia and Moam fights that i use to consider my favorite….. tho i havent gotten to experience yogg or algalon yet….. those may win out first place…….damn guild clears up to yogg in one shot then never schedules another day before reset….frustrating…

Right there with you about the nerfs. Have more or less given up on end-game content — too pointless now — but fishing and hanging out with guildies is still fun.

I’m afraid that the China thing has been misrepresented. They haven’t banned gold farmers at all — what they’ve banned is using in-game currency to buy real-world items. Several companies had started doing this, and it was working as a great money laundering/tax dodge process. So now virtual currency can only buy virtual goods. That’s all. The gold farmers won’t even notice :(

Wow, for the first time, I agree everyone for the first time in a forum in one way or another.rofl:P

Blizz seems too be going down the same road as many others in the game industry, and yes, I’m talking about catering to casual gamers. Understand, to take on wow through 80lvl’s is not the same as playing a new Mario or even FF, but how Blizzard is bending over backwards to let newcomers breeze through 2/3 of the game is only going to contribute to a few million dumbass’s who do not know there class flooding the forums on how hard the game is.

Blizzard has clearly dropped the ball on a number of issues they used to be great at. And yes, we should be able to DW 2 handers, We worked hard for them, let us keep them

Skeletonjack,
I’ve found an incredible DW spec in which I pulled off 4k dps without any glyphs on the PTR’s. I’ll add screenshots of the build and my gear to give you a better feel for it soon. DK’s are still #1!

Hello again,

Just to clarify to Andaris, I’m one of the continuous followers of SK that dealt 6K+ dps on Patchwerk before the nerfes and now 7K+ on Deconstructor (25-man) so no, I’m not doing anything worng. I am well geared with mid Ulduar gear. Best DK gear is not all made by tier as you can see in SK’s BISI posts. What I’m talking is for example, a 53 years old friend that doesn’t know his class (hunter) that well and he’s being gearing up with us, doing the same dps with just 4 clicks… when we have been struggling for the past months trying to look for the best possible rotation not to loose that. You have to admit that if you, by any chance, miss a proc or hit the wrong button during your rotation, you loose dps like no one else. That didn’t happen before or at least it wasn’t so drastic and the worst part is that it will get worse after 3.2 comes out.. sadly.

Cheers!
