The Newb

Posted by: Geistig   in Power Leveling, Specs

Hello, I’m Geist.  And yes, I am a chick that plays WoW.

Ok so now that that’s out of the way, on to why I’m writing for SJ. My Main is Geistig, an Undead Death Knight. While I have played a few classes, the Death Knight has been my favorite character since I rolled Geistig the day WotLK was released. I liked the fact that I could choose a viable leveling build from any one of the three talent trees. I liked the fact that I’d be able to pick a viable raiding spec out of any one of the three talent trees. And I liked the fact that Death Knights could serve as DPS or as Tanks.

When I rolled Geistig, everyone was still figuring out the Death Knight class. You couldn’t find a ton of information about Death Knights that wasn’t beta material. And to me…this made the Death Knight class that much more fun. It was still getting figured out. Fortunately folks like SJ leveled up quickly, and I gathered up their ideas and experiences while leveling my own undead knight of death and destruction!

Granted, I’ve taken a lot longer than pretty much everyone else (still not quite 80). But I’ve taken some detours along the way. I’ve spent some time experiencing what it’s like to be a Death Knight Alliance side, I’ve hung out with SJ over on BB leveling some shaman and druid alts, I’ve been testing Dual Wield leveling viability, and taking advantage of the Death Gate to get back into the Old World and help out some friends that kept getting eaten by something.

That’s the one awesome thing about being Undead. After you kill it, you get to bite it back. :D

Right now I’m working on leveling Geistig to 80 and getting all the gear, enchants, glyphs, etc that she’ll need for end game. Unlike SJ though, I prefer to Dual Wield!! The Undead DK Dual Wield animations are awesome. Geistig practically does some Kung-Fu style moves you’d usually only see on Night Elves. Pfft… why should they get all the fun? I’ve got your Kung Fu Fighting right here!

Dual Wielding

Ok aside from that, there’s a ton of DPS to be had using the 0/33/38 spec. That’s totally on my to-do list. I’m not stoked with the PTR changes to Dual Wield and I’ve tested what I can with a Death Knight that hasn’t hit 80 yet. So I’m hoping that Blizz doesn’t tear up Dual Wielding so badly that it isn’t raid viable (I mean Shadow Priests are raid viable, come on Blizz!!), but hey I play the game. I don’t build it. I don’t think it would be a deal breaker for me if Geistig had to carry a big two hander over dual wielding a pair of hefty axes, but I’d have to say that I’d have a few choice words to say about it (insert mature language filter… here…).

Can you Dual Wield while leveling? Hells yeah! Though I’ve put off Dual Wielding here and there whenever I picked up a really sweet 2 handed weapon just because the improved dps of a brand new blue weapon would cut through mobs all that much faster. When you kill quicker you get XP faster from the kills, speeding up questing in general. Rocket science right?

Weapon drop rate aside, there’s some gearing issues to deal with when you Dual Wield that you don’t have to deal with when working with standard 2 handers.  Such as making sure that you have enough +hit and +expertise.  If you want to land some extra damage with your offhand and make sure that each hit with your main hand makes contact (and brings on the pain), you can’t just slap any green item on. Here and there, you can find some gear that helps out with these factors.

Realistically you don’t want to cheat your performance by trading out a weapon with +strength for two weapons that just have +stamina and +hit. They’ll boost your hit points and they’ll help make your weapon land on the target, but that +strength would have put a little more oomph behind it. Not to mention the fact that you’ll want to select talents that’ll boost DPS, but that aren’t as reliant on pure weapon damage.  DW builds will never do as much damage on Strikes as a 2H build.  So focus on things that increase your spell damage, or can proc damage before focusing on Strike talents. With DW you’re not going to get as much damage per hit.  And the list goes on and on.

Personally, my favorite leveling tree has been Unholy. I love the perma Ghoul, Bone Shield is just hawt!, On a Pale Horse gets you to the quest turn ins a lot faster, and pulling extra mobs with AOE overflow just adds XP. Yep! Nothing like killing a Clefthoof in Negrand, having Desecrate proc, and aggroing a Elek wandering by minding it’s own business. Poor guy didn’t stand a chance.

So in future posts I’ll offer up more details on current Death Knight leveling specs as well as post some basic Death Knight leveling gear recommendations (with some notes for folks that have the Dual Wielding bug too).  But for now I thought I’d leave you with this to enjoy.

3.0.9 DW Leveling Build

  • Try to find a slow MH weapon for Death Strikes when you need the healing.
  • Use Death Runes for either IT, DS, or BB as needed.
  • Use HB and Corpse Explosion whenever you can.  Combined with BB, this will blow things up like the 4th of July!

ST Rotation

IT -> PS -> HB -> BS -> BS  -> Dump

IT -> PS -> HB -> IT -> IT  -> Dump

AoE Rotation

IT -> PS -> Pest -> HB -> BB -> Dump (repeat)

Now before you go, “Are you crazy?”  This spec is 2 things.  One a rough draft, and Two exactly the same premise as what SJ normally recommends.  Some tanking talents go a really long way when leveling, especially when you want to AoE!!  Which I love doing.  SJ mentioned 3.1 will probably come out within the next few weeks, so I’ll try to get working on some 3.1 leveling specs too.

-Geist

P.S.  This is what my sexy Death Knight looks like:

Geistig,

First off, what gives you the right to post on SJ’s totally OP DK Blog: To answer for you, if SJ has faith in you…..then by all that is Unholy SO DO I!!!!

I believe the union of SJ and G will be a great thing and I can’t wait to hear more or you travels and opinions.

Last note: I do not know what the difrence between posting the first picture and posting the pic of Geistig. But I can never EVER see any of SJs pics here at work, but your pic of Geistig comes through nice and shiney!!! So SJ and G mabye you can use that same format for all of your posted pics ~grins evily~

SJ uses photobucket for uploading his pictures while Geistig used the site creeptheprohpet for uploading her picture. Means Photobucket is blocked at your work :)

I’m not so sure Ebon, there’s some pics here you don’t want to see at work (rofl). But I’m pretty sure that can be arranged.

Supposed to be a way for me to upload pics on to my site directly, but it always says they are blocked/protected. I’ve no idea where the setting is. *shrug* My friend said he figured it out, but he’s not been by. Once that gets set up it’ll be a non-issue most likely.

Yeah Richard (Looking for Group) is awesome. Love the recent ones where the running gag is ‘interrogations are hard’, so funny.

Um, yeah I just uploaded the image to my personal site and linked it over. I’ll have to see if I can help SJ get that set up. :D

I was messin around with the Wowhead 3.1 talent tree and found something that “MIGHT”, remember I said it first, might be a good pvp spec…I would have to try it out before putting my stamp on it tho but in theory it looks good.

Blood (33 points)

2/2 Butchery
3/3 Subversion
5/5 Bladed Armor
2/2 Two-Handed Weapon Specialization
1/1 Rune Tap
5/5 Dark Conviction
3/3 Improved Rune Tap
3/3 Veteran of the Third War
1/1 Mark of Blood
3/3 Bloody Vengeance
2/2 Abomination’s Might
1/1 Hysteria
2/2 Improved Blood Presence

Frost (38 points)

3/3 Improved Icy Touch
2/2 Runic Power Mastery
2/2 Icy Reach
5/5 Black Ice
1/1 Lichborne
3/3 Annihilation
5/5 Killing Machine
2/2 Chill of the Grave
2/2 Endless Winter
3/3 Glacier Rot
3/3 Rime
3/3 Chilblains
1/1 Hungering Cold
2/2 Improved Frost Presence
1/1 Unbreakable Armor

Unholy (0 points)

It should be easy for any DK playing why I picked the talents I did.

If you notice, this grabs both IMP BLOOD PRES and IMP FROST PRES = 4% self heals and 10% health. Run both of those in Unholy Pres and you get your GCD reduction also.

Plus you grab Imp Rune Tap for those nice self heals every 30 secs.

Grabing Chillbains and Endless Winter for the Snare + DoT + no runic power for Mind Freeze.
Grab Hungering Cold for that great PvP CC.

Now for your 3 min Cooldown Burst: Hystaria + Unbreakable Armor. 20% bonus to damage + 25% increase in STR…

That would be a nice little burst potental in my minds eye…

So, whacha think?

Giest, first off great post……

Second can u link to a good unholy leveling build thanks….

Bonus healing from Imp BP works only in BP. Read the talent again.

This build does not pick up FS or HS, making it a poor choice. Too many points invested in both trees to skip such amazing attacks.

With the nerfs to IT, and not having top end talents to fill out OB, this build will suffer in PvP. Sorry man.

I am one that checks SJ’s blog weekly and generally agree… and nothing against G and that I dont have faith in her, BUT

A sub 80 DK posting information to help teach other DK’s and new ones at that… doesnt seem to add up, but i guess it remains to be seen.

Hi there,

Sure, you can level while dual wielding, but you’ll kill stuff a lot slower than with a good two-hand weapon. It’s just not possible to find gear with the right compromise of hit, expertise and strength until you start running a few heroics.

I agree that the DW animations are very cool but if you want to level fast, pick a two-hand weapon and the corresponding spec (and apparently, you are not interested in leveling fast since you said you started leveling your DK when WotLK came out but you’re only approaching 80 now).

I lvled my DK to 80 using dualwield and for the exact same reason. She’s an undead female, and I love the attack animation when dualwielding. Only drawback is the amount of hit you need and I was never a fan of the gargoyle/ghoul as they died relatively easy.
This was at the release of wotlk though, corpse explosion was worthless and you didn’t use death strike. Cool to see a lot has changed!

2H wins when leveling…Higher Death Strike hits means less downtime and a lot easier time soloing group quests.

Sorry, Dual Wielding as a DK is just a stupid gimmick.

First off Id like to say great post Giest! I hope to see many more.

I have been leveling a DK off and on between raiding on my main and Ive respeced atleast 20 times just to try everything. Im level 78 now and thought I would give your spec I shot. I have to say it works out great! Even duel wielding an axe and a mace with my mace skill very low I was still able to pull over 1k dps on single mobs. Not only that but questing in Sholazar I have had nearly 0 downtime. (the downtime I did have was just for a bandage)

So I just wanted to say thanks for the advice and I hope to see more posts from you!

ok sorry. i figured it while reading another post.
HB=Howling Blast.

i feel dumb. still dont know what you mean by dump in your rotation tho >:D

March 27th, 2009 at 12:09 am
 29

Pretty sure “dump” means to use your RP, i.e. at the end of a rune-consuming rotation (dumping your RP into for instance death coil while your runes are on cooldown)
