D&D 3.5 and 4.0, BISI, and what’s up with SJ?

Posted by: Skeleton Jack   in Coming Soon

Heya guys!!  In the next few hours I will be finishing up the last of the BISI posts which are all over 50% done already.  So this isn’t a project that will get pushed back.  But I just got home from running, and I need a fricking shower!!  ZOMG!!!  Before winter I started running again because…I got lazy and out of shape.  But then winter came…and guys, I live in New Orleans for a reason.  When it comes to the cold, I’m a fricking sissy!  That’s right, you heard me.  Might as well put pigtails on my head and get me a pink dress, cause I ain’t running in no damn cold weather!!  Heh.  So I’m finally not sick and it’s warm, so it’s time for some running.  And, I finally ordered my P90X if you guys ever heard of it.  I’ll give you a heads up over the next month or two and let you know how it’s coming along.

PTR

But let’s talk about the PTR for a second.  I didn’t do a lot of writing about the PTR because most of the time things change constantly on there.  But recently I sat down and realized that a lot of people are very very interested in what is going on at the PTR, etc.  So whether or not I think it’s relative or important, you guys are interested so it might be time to break some of it down for you all.  After I get the BISI’s rolled out I will get a preliminary post up about PTR changes either late tonight or sometime tomorrow after work depending on how much I decide to include in the post.

D&D

I’m a big time gamer.  I started out playing Gamma World at a camp I attended in the summers when I was 10 years old.  Then I joined the Gaming Society in high school as a Sophmore and began gaming again.  I was playing Tele Arena on BBS’s before MUD’s were even really out there.  And I’ve basically been a “gaming geek” ever since.  Whether it was video games, board games, or pen and paper.

Recently me and my boys have been playing D&D 4.0, which was just released in the past few months.  It’s got it’s ups and downs.  It’s biggest problems however are fairly serious.  It’s not high fantasy/epic at all, casters are just silly underpowered, whomever wins initiative is always at a *massive* advantage, and the system plays more like an MMO pulling the game away from “role playing” which is supposed to be the entire point of playing a pen and paper game to begin with.

A while back some of the guys requested that I run an “Epic” level campaign (which we’ve never really done) and it got pushed back due to some rl issues (break up with the ex-fiance).  Even though we’ve been playing 4.0, to keep it feeling epic we’re going to do it in 3.5 ed.  If you look up top, you’ll see a tab/page called “Shi’dar”.  Shi’dar is the capitol city of a kingdom…er empire now, that is one of the focal points of a lot of plot lines.  Over this weekend I did a lot of work on that page, but it’s password protected atm because I was a little unsure as to my copyright protection.  I don’t want my stuff stolen as it were.  But my understanding now is that it is copyrighted once published on the site, which I did not know.  My question to you guys is this:

Do you want to see and/or read about the campaign and game world?

RPG’s are something I do on the side no matter what.  And I had already considered keeping some notes on events that occured in the game.  There is no chance that I will convert it into a story format with conversations, etc…  But I had considered putting the notes up on a seperate page so you guys could read about the story.  If you guys are interested at all, drop a comment or send me an E-mail.

D&D4 feels like an MMO because thats the market they are trying to garner new blood from. IMHO the classes are really well suited, although they added a huge amount of balance and lost a lot of the flavour. No more 3 HP mages with 2 spells per day – that is not a bad thing.

My biggest beef with D&D is the players. Finding a good group who actually want to “role”play is damn hard, and most modules are a series of combats spread brokenly between NPC encounters where you basically hit “next”. The new system just re-enforces the “hit next” thinking.

If I play again seriously I’d like to think we will not need a combat grid, will throw dice at most twice a session, and will come to love our bad irish, scotish and slavic accents.

I would love to read about it. I’m just a couple years younger than you are, so I’m right there with you, on the gaming experiences. I haven’t been able to get back into DnD lately though, cuz kinda out of buds to play it with. We’re all jobless at the moment from the economy, so that’s pretty much where the attention is going lol, but I get all my DK info from you, and wouldn’t mind reading about some DnD adventures too. Some of them can be down right hilarious.

Hell yes SJ, lets see it.

I like you, have been in to gaming since the early 80’s, started with Classic D&D, moved onto Marvel Super Heroes, then played alot of Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, Twilight 2000, Axis and Allies, and other random Board/Hex games.

I am 38 years old, and have been a gamer since I was 12 or 13, although I havnt played AD&D since my Army days (quit when 2.5 was jsut released) I am keen on hearing your stories.

As a fellow DM, I would love to see your stories. Just recently got into D&D, but we went ahead and stayed with 3.5, since a couple of my players had already played that ruleset a while back.

If you missed the posts, which it seems you did Disrigard, I’m not going to do a 3.0.9 DW post because 3.1 is mutilating DW as it currently stands, and the talent trees are changing. Up until now, my old DW post should suit you fine. But for now, it’s pointless to spend hours working out the info for something that won’t exist once the PTR goes live.
