PTR DK’s at a very quick passing by glance…

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in PTR

Heya guys!!  Very quick passing by glance?!?!  WTF does that mean?  It means I have nachos in the works, and nachos > you guys!! :D

I’ve been doing a lot of reading about DK’s recently and for the most part I’m abivalent about most of what is going on.  Some of the changes are awesome, and some of them stink.  But 3.1 is basically the overhaul to DK’s.  The biggest problem Blizzard will be left hanging with atm, is the severity of nerfs they have piled on to Obliterate to deal with the disease-less specs with the improvements to Death Strike, are now making DS a viable alternative to OB.

All in all not only is this distasteful, making me feel all snobby and crotchity.  “What do you mean I should be Death Striking?!?  Obliterate sounds FAR cooler damnit!!”  But the balance beast is raising it’s weary head, as some Blood DK’s are doing such ridiculous self healing now that it will trivialize their survivability as both tanks and pvp’ers.  WTG Blizz for thinking ahead!!  In the end these bonuses towards DS will hopefully not go through, or we’ll hear more outcries from the tank and pvp community about how OP DK’s are.  And when enough people cry about us, then we will shortly be crying as well.  Trust me.

Unholy is  bit awkward atm (the spec, not the playstyle).  I can’t figure out where to shave points from now, or even whether the new UA talent is even worth it.  But as far as playstyle it’s even better with longer duration diseases!!  How hot is that?!?!  Frost is also going through a great deal of growing pains atm as well.  A lot of Frost Knights are going for perma-ghoul from Unholy, but it’s survivability in a lot of fights will be nil without NotD.  Not to mention they are now struggling with whether they need UP or BP and whether to fight for Impurity or Tundra Stalker.

Some might think that this is a good thing if player’s have to question what to use.  But just remember this is a “testing phase”.  Once enough tests are done, spreadsheets are fixed, and raids are completed…  There will be the tried and true answers yet again detailing what does best and why.

And for those DW blokes out there…  /sigh  I will not torture you any longer.  DW is alive and well, no matter what nay sayers have been crying.  Trust SJ, I’ve not lead you wrong yet.  I’ve not been doing the reading yet, but I’ve seen enough to see quite well that DW is alive and possible.  It just will not likely have a 1-2kdps lead over other specs like it once did.  *shrug*  When I have more, you will get it.

But for now?  NACHOS!!!  I am feeling much better finally for those wondering, even though I slept for close to 20 hours last night.  But I’ve got a full work week ahead of me and plenty of time to get back to a normal pace.  I hope you guys are doing well.

Out and About? Iron Council eh?

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in PTR

Heya guys!!  Well, I’m off to go watch some Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse((**WATCH DOLLHOUSE**  Joss Whedon is da man!!))  I needs a break.  I’m not 100% sure if I’ll be updating things tonight, but we just got finished on the PTR.  IT WAS A TOTAL MESS AGAIN!!!  /sigh  But we did take the Council down to phase 3 to like 68% on the last dude.  But as it turned out, I think we chose the “hard mode” kill method…  >.<  I’ve got tons of screenies to put up, and plenty of strat stuff to talk to you guys about as well.  It wasn’t as much fun as Hodir by any means, but it’s still an interesting fight all the same.  If I don’t get back to you this evening, I’ll have all of the pics up tomorrow at latest.  I’m still a lil under the weather, so it’s entirely possible I’ll crash out watching some TV and get back to you tomorrow.

Oh, and as a minor update.  Been doing a mediocre Unholy build that could use some tweaking.  It can sustain 4k+ dps so far with running around.  But Gargoyle is suffering from some serious issues I’ll talk about later.  I don’t know what to make of the new Unholy Aura for PvE purposes, and this stupid talent to buff your Ghoul sucks hairy, sweaty, nasty, you know what.  See you guys soon!!

Hodir. The man. The legend. The target. Kill Shot!!

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in Uncategorized

Heya guys!!  We kicked Hodir tonight!!  Yeah, that’s right!!  I stuck my foot right up his arse!!  :D  I got into PTR this evening with my guild, but it was an utter snaffu!!  Quite misreable really.  Non stop critical errors crashing the game, constant dc’s due to lag and overloading the servers, and awful load times overall.  It took me nearly 20-30 minutes just to get out of Dalaran.  Blizzard support consisted of one…ONE…developer trying to help people and failing misreably.  His fault?  No way!!  How the hell is one guy supposed to help EVERYONE?!?!  Not happening…  /sigh

Anyways, after much trial and tribulation we managed to get 10 people all together inside the instance.  Not only did we get 10 people there, but we even had 2 tanks, 3 healers, and 5 dps.  ;)   Let the good times roll!!  So, without further ado lets talk about the boss fight itself in Ulduar 10man.

Ulduar 10 Man

Now as you come in to the room, you’ll notice that there are some ice block’ed dudes in the room, the MAN himself, and then some weird frosty lookin’ anvil chest things.  Forget the chests, they’re probably where the loot goes.  Wait, don’t forget the loot!!!  I mean, damn!!  Remember the loot, REMEMBER THE LOOT!!!  Just remember it…later…  Right, moving on…

Now these lil guys in these ice blocks are buggy.  Shocker right?  Pick two of them and agro on to those ice blocks.  Don’t hit the boss first.  Have your tank running in and grabbing threat like he is supposed to on the pull, but have dps and tanks first hit the two lil guys you want to free to help you fight.  Some of them will despawn, and if you do not target the guys you want off the bat, they will sometimes despawn as well.  It’s not 100% fixed yet.

There are basically four lil guys who “can” come out and help you.  But you only get 2 at a time in 10 man.  So depending on what you want you pick two lil buggers to help out.  But we’ll come back to these 4 lil guys in a minute.  First, lets talk about what the boss does during the encounter.

Now in this picture you can see 2 of the effects done throughout the fight.  Biting Cold is a debuff on everyone in the entire raid.  It starts off as a stack of 1 doing minimal raid damage, and by simply jumping or moving you can keep the stacks down to 1 or 2 at all times.  The nasty part here is that if it builds up to 3+ stacks, jumping once will not reduce it instantly down to 1 stack.  You have to keep moving to get it back down to 1.  There is no way to stop Biting Cold through player actions.  Remember this.   So it is imperative that you move and/or jump consistently throughout the entire raid.

The other effect that you can see here is Flash Freeze, which is sometimes a death sentence and must be avoided at all costs.  This is not something that you can wait for it to wear off as it has a 5 minute duration.  And since you cannot move while under the effect, Biting Cold will continue stacking until it eventually kills you.  Now the upside here is that it, the Flash Freeze, is targetable.  So suffering through one is not an instant wipe or loss of a character.  But you cannot afford to have your dps constantly breaking people out of these Ice Blocks because the Flash Freeze’s do come fairly frequently.

The boss has a 10 minute enrage timer which pretty much means a wipe.  So it is imperative that your dps is killing the boss and not contantly breaking people free of Flash Freeze.  Now periodically during the fight small snowstorms will start falling from the ceiling, and after a few seconds large falling ice will drop to the ground doing massive damage (10k+) and knockback.  Think similar to Gruul.  Now these little snowstorms are especially important because at Flash Freeze, there are 2 special ones.

Directly to Hodir’s left and directly on top of him you can see 2 snowstorms falling.  Now I did not get a decent pick of any normal snowstorms, but this should still be sufficient.  The regular snowstorms that just drop the frosty doom on you are much easier to see through.  They will not be as cloudy, frosty, or difficult to see through as these are.  Every Flash Freeze however there will be 2 special snowstorms that look just like this.  It is important to note that these 2 storms can appear right on top of each other.  So it may look like there is only one at times.

When these appear you need to run up NEXT to them, but NOT ON TOP OF THEM!!!  They are about to drop massive blocks of ice “of frosty doom” ™ which will knock you away from them, which is very very very bad.  Once they drop, 2 mounds of snow appear.

Once they have dropped, you then immediately run and get on top of these fluffy mounds of safety goodness!!  <3  They will make you immune to the Flash Freeze.  Now sometimes if you are too far on the edge you will get the Flash Freeze anyways, but it’s not a big deal because the snow you’re standing on will get rid of it immediately.  There is also another little trick possible too.  If you are too far away, for whatever reason, if you leap as Flash Freeze is casting you will continue forward even while frozen.  So long as you land on top of the snow, the effect will be removed from you.  I know, it happened to me!!  Got too close waiting for the icicles to drop and ate a knockback…  >.<  Heh.

Lastly the boss has two other tricks up his sleeve.  He will periodically cast frost novas (dispellable) around the raid and will also buff himself with an uber damage buff.  His hands will get all glowy (you cannot miss it) and he stops doing physical damage and does all frost damage.  They can still be avoided (dodge/parry), but armor no longer does jack.  How to live through it?  Have a Prot Warrior turn on his reflection thingy and turn his back to the boss.  The Prot War will do like 20k+ damage per Reflection easy.  The reason he turns his back is for a dps boost.  He will avoid a lot of the damage if he is facing him through avoidance.  But since he will not take any damage with reflection up, you don’t want to dodge or parry these attacks.  You want them all reflected.  By turning your back to the boss, every hit will land, or in this case, be reflected back at the boss.  Turn back around once Reflection is off though.

Now, let’s get back to those lil guys who wanna help for a second.

If you look closely you can see a gnome mage off to my right.  And then you can see me standing directly to the left of a small camp fire that the mage creates periodically.  Now if you look to the far right of the screen where my buffs are, there is no debuff up there.  The mage drops these nice lil fires that allow casters to stand on top of them without gaining the Biting Cold debuff.  So long as an icicle of doom doesn’t appear above you, this allows the casters/ranged a lot more breathing room for standing still and doing their jobs.

Now if you look here you cannot see the Elemental Shaman off the screen, but you can see his Chain Lightning hitting me and FM.  It grants a buff for about 15 seconds that ups your damage.  I cannot remember if it upped the crit % or the bonus damage from crits, but all in all…you do more damage.

Now sadly I did not manage to get pics of the priest and boomkin effects, but I can at least tell you about them.  The priest was dispelling the frost novas periodically cast by the boss and doing some healing.  And then the boomkin was applying some buff that was doing haste or something like that for people.

Allies:

  • Mage:  Brings dps to the table and also creates campfire zones where casters can stand still without gaining Biting Cold stacks.
  • Boomkin:  Brings dps to the table and also buffs your dps to do more damage.
  • Priest:  Heals for you (or maybe he smites and does dps…  *shrug*) and also dispells the AoE frost novas the boss periodically casts.
  • Elemental Shaman:  Brings dps to the table and also buffs your dps to do more damage.

Once you have things down the Mage combined with either the Boomkin/Shaman (depending on which buff is better) will allow for the fastest kill possible.  The mage is too valuable since he can actually allow your ranged dps to do their job and just dps.  Every Flash Freeze will hit these guys unless they get lucky and end up on a snow mound somehow.  You need to break them free every time, and your healers can heal them.  They do not appear to take Biting Cold damage, but do take all other damage.

Boss Abilities:

  • Flash Freeze – It can be avoided by getting on one of two snow mounds that appear right before it is cast.  Remember to avoid the falling ice before they are formed or you may be knocked too far away.  If it is not avoided then dps must break people free from their prisons.
  • Biting Cold – It can be avoided entirely by standing next to a fire created by the Mage NPC if it is out, but otherwise you must rely on moving and/or jumping to keep this debuff down to 1 stack.
  • AoE Frost Nova – It is periodically cast and cannot be avoided except by spreading out well.  It can be dispelled.
  • Frozen Blows - The boss will do *massive* damage versus the tank.  His physical hits become “Frost” damage bybassing armor, hitting significantly harder.  It is best to use a Prot War so they can reflect the damage back at the boss.  But other options like a DK tank with AMA and IBF could work.
  • Falling Ice – Similar to Gruul, a small swirl of ice and snow will begin to fall to the ground.  You must get out of this area (similar to a void zone) or a massive block of ice will fall upon you knocking you back and doing massive damage to you as well (10k+).

Pets:

This fight is NOT friendly to pets.  You need to have a pet macro set up to pull your pet out of the fire…er ice…so to speak.  When Flash Freeze starts, make your pet follow you and get the hell out of there.  Every pet frozen is that much less dps getting done, and wasted time spent on getting them free.

Kill Shot?!?!

Sadly no we did not kill Hodir.  Had we not been hung up all night with dc’s, loading issues, people stuck in Dalaran, waiting to even be able to zone in to Ulduar, etc…  We would have.  Once we figured out where the snow mounds were we brought Hodir down to 40% before we hit the enrage timer at 10 minutes and he killed us.  Then shortly after Blizz called the testing as finished, and the next thing we know our MT is teleported out of the zone and a wipe ensues.   /sigh  Ah well…

You do not need an OT, and if you’re healers are really good you can honestly roll with just 2 if you wanted to.  Preferably with one of them as a Druid if you went with 2.  It’s a REALLY FUN fight, and it is a total blast!!  You guys are seriously going to enjoy it!!

Disclaimer:

This is not meant to be an UBER BOSS GUIDE!!!  This is not a boss guide site.  But, this is still something you may find useful on your raids!!  ;)

I had more fun tonight in WoW than I have had in a very long time guys.  Ulduar appears to have been done very well, and I look forward to telling you guys more and more about it!! ;)

Ulduar Sneak Peek!!

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in Raids

Heya guys!!  Short and sweet, they opened testing tonight and I was there.  Barely, lol.  I went to bed last night around midnight.  Woke up for an hour around 5am when my roomie went to work.  Got on PTR, updated my UI and set up all my mods.  Went back to bed before 6am, and then woke up at 6pm.  Still sick…noticed?  On the upside however I immediately checked PTR and low and behold…ULDUAR!!!  YAY!!!!

Now the down side?  Crash city man….crash, crash, crash, crash, crash, BOOM, crash some more, boom, BOOM, crash, CRASHITY CRASH CRASH, and then after a few more BOOMS, we crashed some more.  /sigh  Bugged as hell, with no reliable support, you are on your own.

If you want to get on the PTR and get some testing done, log in during off peak hours and get your toon 100% situated.  Once that is done you have two options.  Either log out at the zone in and hope for good luck when you load in.  Or log out somewhere near the zone in entrance, but far enough from all of the other yahoo’s so that they don’t crash you out instantly.  I will be doing a post about the Hodir fight shortly, but for now some pic loving!!

For the love of God do not leave yourself logged in Dalaran, or when you log in you will pull out your hair during peak hours!!!

Now up till this point you’ve basically been seeing the entrance run in areas of Ulduar.  This was all presumably the area where all of the siege engines will be used for the first boss enocunter.  As of this moment trash mobs and all bosses are disabled except for the one boss that they are currently testing, which is Hodir at this time.  Coming up next, is after you leave the courtyard inside of Ulduar and zone into the Keep itself.

From what I understand this “fake” floor does not exist in the real raid, but was added in to facilitate testing of Hodir.  It made it quite easy to reach him.  The question arises as to what has to be gone through in the real Ulduar then to get past this breach?

Wrong way…

HODIR!!!  BOOYAAA BABY!!!!

So yeah, that’s it for now!!  The scenery is breathtaking guys!!  I love how this place looks.  I hope you enjoyed these screenshots!!

Some things.

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in Coming Soon

Heya guys!!  3.1 is out on PTR and a ton of the changes up there 100% destroy any and all current DW builds except for possibly the X/X/51 DW spec…  But even that one will be undergoing changes.  BCB will have a 3 second internal CD, Necrosis will only work on the MH weapon, HB is now a 51 point talent, and more…  I’ll be pouring through everything as much as possible, don’t worry.  And my guild will also be on the PTR raiding when the Uludar bosses are released.  You *WILL* get the inside scoop here, I promise.  I will be trying out all kinds of stuff on there I am sure.

So yeah, lots of stuff on PTR.  I’ll get back to you more when I feel better.  Oh yeah, and you can’t read the Shi’dar stuff for a reason.  It has nothing to do with WoW.  Sorry guys.  It’s easier for me to host information about my D&D campaign here than try to print material and E-mail, etc.  I can just edit it, and then my players can come read it all.

Heya guys!!  I’m a new and recent fan of the Australian TV show called The Chaser’s WAR on Everything, airing on G4 TV for us down here in New Orleans.  But they had a hysterical clip I just saw this evening, and I’d thought I’d share it with you.  LOL

Now for those of you who did not realize, I am “Naturally Nawlins’”.  Well, I’ve spent the vast majority of my life here anyways, heh.  I was born up north, but came down here to the south by the age of like 3 or something.  And outside of a few short stints in Atlanta, where my dad lived before he passed away,  I’ve pretty much been here all of my life.  So, I figured it might be time to share with you guys a little bit of home.  Lent is around the corner for Christians out there (NO is serious Christian territory FYI), but for us here in New Orleans, all that really means is that it is time to PARTY MARDI GRAS style!!

So I thought I’d share some classic Mardi Gras pics and songs with you guys.

Update part deux

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in /rl

Heya guys!!  Right.  So I went to work today and after 2 hours my boss sent me home, I looked that misreable.  Why’d I go in?  It’s the holidays here in New Orleans, so it really would not have looked good had I called in.  I still feel like crap though, and have not even been spending much time on the computer…maybe 15-20 minutes total now in 4 days.  The worst is over, but it’s far from finished.  Really sorry everything’s been delayed.

It sucks more than you know.  I’m going to be running a table top campaign soon, and I’m converting over some rules and my storyline.  It’s a lot of time and effort.  Add in how much work I wanted to get done with specs, especially DW.  And then my special plans for 3.1 Uludar release are not even fully prepped yet, and that’ll be on PTR any day now.  I have not checked yet to see if it hit within the last day or so.  /sigh  Plus there’s my friend’s daughter who has cancer, and just the list goes on.

Shadow has just crawled up in front of the keyboard demanding attention too.  :P   The little bugger has not understood why I’ve been in bed so much, and has promptly and quickly let me know her irritation about being cooped up with no play time by attacking my feet and legs while I sleep.  Worst part is, even if I open the door for her to leave and explore the house she stays in my room attacking me.  *rolls eyes*

I’ve got a mostly prepped post from before I got sick that should be up relatively soon.  It’s a lil something special.  But it’s mostly finished already, with only a few odds and ends that need attention.  Hopefully it won’t be too much longer after that one before I’m ready to sit down and get some writting done.

Update

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in /rl

Heya guys!!  As a heads up, I was/am off of work Sat/Sun this week, plus I’ve got a little bit of free time.  I had planned on putting up a post or two on Fri and Sat, and doing some much needed research, but I got really sick.  Fever spiked at 101 degrees, body aches, congestion, the works.  My fever just broke, the sweats woke me up since my bed is soaked atm because of it, but I still feel crappy.  I’ll be having some stuff up soon hopefully.

Possible Site Construction Incoming!!

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in Website

Heya guys!!  So it’s time for me to sit down and start doing some heavy thinking on where my site is going.  I’ve had my down time, and I’ve pulled back some to help alleviate with burnout.  But now it’s time to move forward.  Adding extra pages is the likely first step, though it may not be visible to you guys off the bat.  Thinking about putting together several new pages.  Expanding a new page just for Specs, and breaking them down for you guys.  Things like PvE raiding, PvP, leveling, Tanking, and more.  I want to go back and update my Macros as well and get that on a prominent page I’m thinking.  I need to finish up BISI, but I’ve got 2 posts coming this week for a fact on that one.  I’ve also been putting in some serious consideration for really putting up a forum on my domain for a lot of you readers.  But that one is a bit more of a “down the road”.

I’ve also decided to add some Ads to my site finally in the near future, and they will be likely coming from Google Adsense (sp?).  I’ve been told my several reliable people that this is the way to go.  I’m not savvy with this stuff though, so if there are issues you’ll have to bear with me.  What do I mean?  Gold spammers.  I am going to be looking into how to block these guys.  But please remember, even Blizzard got bamboozled when they added ads to their Site.  Sometimes those sneaky lil buggers weazle their way in.  If they do, notify me if I miss it, and I’ll take care of the problem.

See!?!?  LOL, this still cracks me up!!  Even Blizzard can miss it, and they HATE gold spammers!!  :D

I’d like this site to also be a valuable resource to you guys.  Which means that I need some of the more relevant and valuable posts should be prominent to any reader coming here.  So in the next 1-2 months I will be working on making that happen.  Also I will be looking into doing some actual site construction and revamping.  This means I will be outsourcing, heh.  I’ve got a rl friend I will be going to first, but I may be limited there.  I very, very, very MUCH like the format and look of my site.  But it was a premade template, so it’s got a lot of inherent restrictions built into it limiting what can be done.  And my friend is not Word Press savy (the software I use for blogging), so I’m not sure how much he can get done.

Also, it’s going to take some serious time and effort on his part, so it will be waiting until after I get some ads up.  Quite frankly, he’s done a lot to help me with this site already.  And without an incentive (aka free food and/or some cash flow) there is only so much more he is going to actually want to do for me.  Who wants to go help someone else make a website they care nothing for, for free?  Heh.  So I’ll try to use some newfound web income to help a brother out.

Cancer

Also, I am going to have something up about my friend’s daughter soon.  The daughter’s name is Eleanor.  I could have the spelling off…not sure.  I will be holding a raffle for prizes, and be doing a charity donation for her.  If you missed it, she has cancer and is not even in kindergarten yet.  Her best case scenario in an ideal world is only a 40% chance of survival.  Can you imagine that?  I get upset every time I think about it.

I’m waiting on some finalized details, but basically I am having her mom set up a new savings account in her daughter’s name and a new paypal account.  I’ll be hosting the details up on my site, and I’ll be giving you the details of their blog about her daughter’s condition, which her father first created.  Anyone can donate any amount they wish, but I will likely be offering the raffle to anyone who donates a certain minimum amount of $, somewhere between $15-$25.  I will put up 10k of my own gold as the prize, and then likely double it if we get a certain minimum total.  Say somewhere in the range of $2k to $10k total cash donations.  So it could be a raffle for as much as 20k in game WoW gold.  I will simply pay the rl cash to transfer characters to the winner’s server and give them the gold.  Some things are still in the air, but that is the current idea.

So, we’ve got a lot coming down the pipe.  And it will not be an overnight process.  Everything will likely take between 1-3 months to get finished.  And for those more interested in the here and now.

OMFG WHAT ABOUT DUAL WIELD!?!?!?

I will try to give you guys preliminary information about DW specs while I am in the testing phase.  But I need you guys to realize something.  There are about 4 prevalent DW specs out there at the moment, and with sometimes more than one rotation per spec.  This will not be a simple “Wham, Bam, Thank you mam!!” deal.  Expect 2 weeks minimum for a hardcore polished post detailing everything for you.  That being said though, I will try to get some preliminary posts up with some of the basics.

That all being said, it’s time for me to get some stuff done.  I have not kept up with DW research, so I’ve got so much backlogged info to go through, it’ll probably take me 2 days of spending a few hours reading through everything just to get caught up.  That’s not even including testing, playing, or alternative research methods.

E-mails and Comments

I have not had the time to deal with these, but I am horribly overdue on making this happen.  Give me some time, I promise I will.
