More nerfs…yay!! /facepalm KM, Gargoyle, yadda yadda…

Posted by: Skeleton Jack   in Blue

Heya guys!!  So there is a lot to talk about with the upcoming PTR changes, however for the moment we’re only touching on a few points.

  • Killing Machine now gives Your melee attacks a chance to make your next Icy Touch, Howling Blast or Frost Strike a critical strike.
  • Necrosis now give your auto attacks an additional 4/8/12/16/20% shadow damage.
  • Summon Gargoyle now persists up to 30 seconds.  Damage from Gargoyles has been reduced from 64-86 to 51-69.
  • Anti-Magic Zone now lasts up to 10 seconds.
  • Gnaw cooldown has been increased from 20 to 30 seconds.

Outside of Necrosis, this is pure fail.  Keep in mind that Necrosis tends to never exceed 3% of your total damage, so this 5 point talent will cap out at 4-7% of your damage tops.  With 4-5% being more realisitic with these changes.  No one is sure yet what the PPM is on KM, so lets talk about it for just a moment for the uninitiated.

PPM

PPM stands for Proc Per Minute.  This is usually set to a number.  Let’s use the number 10 for example.  Now if an item or ability has a PPM of 10, that means that normally without anything changing your attacks you’d get 10 procs (or activations) per minute on average.  So if you would normally attack 30 times in 60 seconds (with haste) then you’d get 1 proc per 3 attacks.

Instant casts change things, as they don’t count as your normal attacks.  So if you fire off 30 instant cast attacks in 60 seconds you got 60 attacks in 60 seconds.  With the same PPM of 10, once you add in the instant casts, you will actually proc 20 effects in 1 minute since you are normally at 1 proc per 3 attacks with your current stats, etc…  Now, this is a bit simplified, but that is basically how PPM works.  You can also check out a read on PPM at WoW Wiki.

OK, so at the moment no one knows what the PPM on KM is, but I guess some testers will hopefully find out for us soon.

Summon Gargoyle

Summon Gargoyle is now less than 50% of what it was.  Remember that for about the first 10 seconds of the Gargoyle’s duration, he’s not doing bupkiss.  He’s summoning in.  So in actuallity you will only have a potential of about 20-25 seconds of dps instead of 50-55 seconds of dps.  Add in that the base damage is being reduced, and this has become a MASSIVE nerf to DK’s.

While it’s good to nerf this talent in regard to the fact that any and every spec can get it, this screws over Unholy spec dramatically.  Unholy is not really being buffed in any way outside of Necrosis, and that isn’t much to begin with.  So you’re looking at a pretty severe dps drop off.  It’s time to get crackin’ on ideas and thoughts on how to make up for some of this dps in the Unholy tree without affecting other trees.  Get on over to the PTR forums and drop some feedback and/or suggestions.

PvP Nerfs

AMZ to 10 seconds.  I’d personally think this deserves at least 20 seconds.  It requires a 6 point investment to gain, and has limited use which solid CC can actually negate entirely.  Not too keen on 10 seconds.

And wtf with screwing over our Stun?!?  It’s the biggest reason to stay spec’d into Ghouls for PvP to begin with.  /sigh

More to come

Well I’m off for the moment.  I’m still waiting to hear more feedback on the DK nerfs and changes.  And it’s things like these changes to KM and Gargoyle that is making me wait on revamps and touch ups on specs and rotations.  There’s still no telling where we will land.

This is like voting though guys.  If you don’t go speak up and leave some kind of feedback, then you’ve got no one to blame but yourself if you get something you don’t like.  PTR forums.

Hello SJ and thank you for the info you share with us!

What I’d like to ask is, now with the new overall changes coming on 3.0.8, will there be a viable DW PvP Specc?

Something close to 0/32/39, but PvP Oriented? I know it’s hard to have a PvP Specc without BIG numbers, but now that HB has no CD and with the general white dmg boost, you think that it might have a chance?

I am a really big fun of unique-ness and DW-ing. So if there’s a chance to make such a build and adjust it to my playstyle and actually be effective I’d really like some help / proposals.

Thanks in advance mate!

A blue post from GC has Killing Machine at 5 ppm… and it’s proccing off white damage now, not crits. Supposedly to remove the randomness of the procs…

Hiya Jack! I love the “No crying in baseball” quote. As a woman in a mostly male company, I have to repeat that to myself every stinkin’ day. The good old boys club is alive and kickin’ even in this day and age around here.

Anyway, my Death Knight is Sttryker from Hellscream and I have to say I love your site. I found it a few weeks ago and it’s everybit as good and informative and BRK. I read them both twice a day just to be sure I get all the good info.

Thanks for posting and keep up the good work!

I don’t pvp much at all so this is coming from a pure raid point of view.

I’m fairly happy with the KM changes.
There are good, mutliple reports, of KM being 5 procs per minute PER WEAPON. And that the formula is calculated BEFORE haste.

Some people are reporting 5-6 PPM with 2h, and 11-12 PPM with DW. Which really, ain’t too bad. Let’s face it DW was overpowered, Gargoyle nerf will hurt us fairly bad, but the KM nerf wasn’t too bad imo, and Necrosis is just a little bit extra dps now.

Honestly, I’m not sure what your experience in Arenas are like but DKs have to be nerfed and these nerfs are well warranted. The class is currently just too Overpowered.

I know it is fun playing a class that is so dominating but in the end the lack of balance is detrimental to the game.

Anyway, hopefully these changes stick and really balances the pvp aspect of things.

OMFG I just started a TOPIC on the PTR forums Titled R.I.P. Unholy. Within 10 minutes it was deleted.
“I understand where the downgrading of Unholy DPS is coming from. I agree that Gargoyle was overpowered, and that the ability to STUN with your ghoul every 20 seconds was causing a lot of cries for help.
HOWEVER
The ?nerf? that Gargoyle is getting lowers it?s damage by more than 50%. You had two options, shorten the duration, or lower the DPS. Yet you?ve chosen to do both?!

Ok, lets look at the Ghoul Stun; which honestly might have been the only reason other than AMZ to spec into Unholy for PVP. ? Cool down increased from 20seconds to 30seconds? is this to balance it out with Rogues? Since rogues can only stun you once every 30 seconds? ?. Wait no?.. is it cause you can only be feared by a warlock every 30 seconds?. No?? wait I know its to bring it in line with the Paladins LOLStunHammer?.. I?m pretty sure that?s not it either.

The only form of CC that Death knight?s have?..not worth the points anymore?

Blizzard Fear Not!
You will no longer have a problem with all DPS builds going down the unholy tree for Gargoyle, NOR will you have all PVP Death knights going unholy for the Ghoul. ?

In one ?FAIL? swoop, you?re going to ?push? everyone into other trees.

Thanks. ”

I’m glad that your stupid and pointless QQ post was deleted off of the PTR forum. I would actually READ the wow forums more often if they weren’t filled with wastes of space like your post. There was nothing constructive in your post, it was just you crying about an OP spec being nerfed.

I would direct you over to worldofming.com. Read the post from a few days ago by Serennia (aka the unholy death knight Nathyrra, the top rated arena player IN THE WORLD). Nearly every single change that has been made are EXACTLY the changes that he suggested are necessary to balance unholy death knights. I spose that he, the top rated death knight and player in the world, also does not know what he is talking about?

The Killing Machine change is FANTASTIC. Right now in my gear I have around 27% crit self buffed. That means that I have approximately a 13.5% chance on each white attack to have KM proc on a mob. Against a pvp target, that % chance was reduced to the point where KM was skipped in nearly all frost pvp builds because it was useless. With the new 5 PPM system and a 3.5 sec weapon speed, I will have ~30% chance on each white hit to have KM proc in PvE AND PvP. The talent is now fantastic for pvp, and still great for pve.

AMZ and gargoyle were just plain OP. When blood DPS builds are skipping their 51 point talent in order to take the UH 21 point talent, there is OBVIOUSLY something wrong. When a 21 point talent is chain critting for 3k+ in pvp and is out of all melee range, there is OBVIOUSLY something wrong. When an ability like AMZ can completely shut down any and all caster heavy teams for an entire duration of an arena match, there is OBVIOUSLY something wrong. When every single pvping death knight is specced unholy, and when death knights are as over represented as they are on the SK-100, something OBVIOUSLY needs to change.

As a frost death knight am completely thrilled with the changes coming in this new patch.
