Comments, Questions, and Answers???

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in PTR

Heya guys!!  Sometimes questions and comments on the site can get away from me.  Whether I miss them in the mix, there are too many, plan to get to them later, etc…  I tried to answer most of the relevant ones just now, but skipped some of the Garg/DW spec ones because the comment was getting so long, it really deserves it’s own post.  So expect more dps commentary and discussion on these things later tonight or tomorrow.  ;)

8 posts in one day is too much, you guys need something for later.  :P

Heya guys!!  I had not intended to delve to greatly into this, however I’ve seen a great deal of outrage (both here and on other forums) about the intended nerfs for DW DK specs and Summon Gargoyle.  So lets talk about this for a minute.

Summon Gargoyle

This is a 21 point Unholy talent.  So the selling point here is that any spec can get this talent easily while still dropping 50 points into their main tree.  In addition to that, it is very easily accessible to any Hybrid spec.  So the end result is that every top end dps PvE spec in the game at the moment includes Summon Gargoyle as part of their build.

Now before you say, “But my spec doesn’t have Gargoyle!!”  Read what I said, “So the end result is that every top end dps PvE spec in the game at the moment includes Summon Gargoyle as part of their build.”  That is not to say other specs currently suck, but that the highest performing dps specs in game at the moment all include Gargoyle.  Whether it be Blood, Frost, Unholy, or a Hybrid build.

Now lets step back a minute and look at all of the other classes in WoW as if we did not currently play any specific class.  Try to gain some objectivity.  What class out there has one 21 point talent that is so valuable and OP that every single top end PvE spec goes out of their way to include it if they want to break meters and be “ZOMG DAS UBER!!!”  There is not one.  None.

That fact alone should be ringing alarm bells.

Now the side bar perspective here is that if Summon Gargoyle was to be seen as an “Unholy” pet then this would be more of an acceptable talent.  Even though it can easily produce 15% of your dps, were it a tree specific advantage it would not be as much of an issue.  Similar to how only Frost Mages have Water Elementals.  Were Blizzard to move Summon Gargoyle deeper into the Unholy tree and only marginally reduce it’s dps, then any issue would be moot.  Unholy is the Pet tree.

As things stand however our lil Gargoyle is entirely out of whack as it is.

Dual Wield – How it should be…

Blizzard and many posters are trying to say how the big problem at the moment with DW is that Killing Machine is too OP with 2 fast weapons.  *shrug*  The fact is that it is only part of the problem.  And to make matters worse Blizzard is compounding the problem with the removal of the 6 sec CD on Howling Blast with the 3.0.8 patch.

Three major factors cause DW specs to be problematic.  Howling Blast, Summon Gargoyle, and Killing Machine.  HB and SG are very very powerful talents to begin with, especially with Howling Blast comboing off of Rime.  Add in an obscene proc rate from KM when you have two very fast weapons, and all of the other stacking spell damage talents from Frost and Unholy…it gets nightmarish.  Too many different things all stacking and multiplying upon themselves.  It adds up.

The easiest fix would be to simply move both HB and SG deeper into their respective trees.  Shaman recently saw something similar.  The Enhancement talent Mental Quickness had to be moved deeper into the Enhancement tree because the Elemental shaman were specing deeply into Enhancement just to get the bonus spell power from it, which was increasing their dps more than any talent combination in the Elemental tree.

A similar change to Unholy and Frost would alleviate the “min/maxed” builds coming out from Hybrid DW specs which currently outperform all 2H specs.  Were these talents both moved into the 41 Tier, combo issues would be null and void.

As to KM, they currently seek to make a change moving this to a PPM, or Proc Per Minute, effect which would be awful.  I hate to go back to Shaman again, but yet again a similar answer lies right there.  Back in the day, the Windfury weapon imbue was so ungodly powerful for DW, they they had to put an internal cooldown on the proc rate.  Basically if your MH procs a WF proc, then neither your MH or your OH can proc WF again for 3 seconds.  Applying a similar effect to KM solves the issue of KM becoming too powerful with super fast weapons.  Give KM an internal cooldown, and viola!!  /win

So…wtf explain why nerf again?!!?

OK…

Lore is controlled by Blizzard.  But the fact is, they only like to cause upheaval in their Lore when either it makes sense, or in their “infinite wisdom” it becomes a good move.  Read: “Space Alien Gypsies”.  Don’t get me wrong…I like the Draenei.  But space ships…REALLY!?!?  REALLY!?!?!?  WTF!?!?  /sigh

Blizzard has stated emphatically, in several different ways on more than one occasion, that they do not want Death Knights to be a Dual Wield class.  That isn’t to say they don’t want the option to be available to them.  But they don’t want to see every single DK DW in PvE content because it’s so much more OP than 2H builds.

Basically this comes down to a design flaw that does not meet the expectation of the designer.  If you make something that is supposed to be awesome with x and good with y, but suddenly you find out it’s better with y than x…well then you have a problem.  X is 2h, and Y is DW.  They wanted DK’s to be able to DW if they wanted to and to be good at it.  But not to the point where it beats every conceivable 2H build available.  Hence, you have a design flaw.

While I think their designers make a lot of obvious mistakes because they are too far removed from the game itself, this is one you have to really back them up on.  It’s not supposed to be this way, so I see nothing wrong with their adjustment of it.  In the end it is fair to expect DW to be brought to a point where it is within a 5-10% dps loss from 2H builds, because that is the design.  This isn’t a surpise or new to anyone who has read up on DK’s.  We’re not supposed to be primarily DW.  People shouldn’t act like it’s something they deserve.  Blizz said up front DK’s are 2H’er guys.

And the Gargoyle nerf should be readily apparent at this point.

I hope this makes everything make more sense for some of you guys.  I am behind the concept that changes need to be made (read: “nerf”) to both SG and DW; however, I am not 100% that the path Blizzard is choosing is the correct one.  That means you guys need to carry out the good word and make sure people and especially Blizzard know to make the right changes and why.

Be prepared.  Knowledge is Power.  Nothing will ever change if you don’t speak your mind.

Incoming DK Nerfs, DW, and Gargoyle…

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in Blue

Heya guys!! ;)   So, the big bad Blizzard Nerf Bat loom before us!!!  Arrrggghhhh!!!  Run for the hills!!!!  Ahhhhhh!!!!  lol

“There are talents that benefit DW more than 2H. We think that is more interesting than every talent always giving you the same benefit no matter what your gear choices. BCB, Killing Machine and Necrosis, among others, should benefit DW.  If DW is too strong now, as some players think, then these are talents we might change. Yeah, we agree with Sawney. A proc per minute on Killing Machine would nerf DW a little while making an expensive talent more attractive for 2H Frost.  We would also like to buff Necrosis a little since it just doesn’t pay for itself right now, but that could end up buffing DW too.” (Source)

“Mr. Gargoyle is overpowered. His damage will be going down.” (Source)

OK, so are any of you surprised?  Shouldn’t be.  Really.  If you are familiar with game mechanics and balance, then these comments should have been expected.  Me and my buddy Mythra are always amazed personally with game designers.  We’ve been friends for over 10 years now.  I helped co-write a tabletop role playing game that he helped play test, and we’ve both been playing MMO’s, Computer Games, and tabletop RPG’s for years.  And we honestly feel like slapping game designers sometimes because as soon as we hear what is being released we just look at one another and say, “WTF ARE THEY THINKING?!”

Hell, I’ll never forget when he told me they were releasing the Hunter tree where you could get Readiness in a full BM spec and that it worked on Beastial Wrath, aka Big Red Kitty, aka Red Rocket.  Meaning a Hunter could keep up BW for a full minute lol.  Yeah right, lololololololdiediediediediedie!!!!!  lolwut?!?!

Summon Gargoyle…aka Summon Can o’ Woop A$$!!

So Gargoyle can be 15% of a DK’s DPS.  Think about that.  How many talents in game attribute 15% of any one character’s dps?  That’s a big damn deal.  And it’s stupid early in the tree at 21 points.  So anyone can get it.  /sigh

I personally would rather see it just moved down deeper into the tree to make it an “Unholy” trick, but I don’t see them doing that.  Now the big deal here that you need to keep your eye on is the posts testing this change when it eventually hits the PTR.  No, it is not currently nerfed on PTR.  But when it is, you need to post about it in reference to Unholy DPS.  Them nerfing Garg is fine, so long as they do something to increase Unholy DPS.  Because if it gets hit upside the head, and nothing else changes…then Unholy is getting the short end of the stick.

Now as far as DW is concerned…

This needs to be nerfed, but their idea of changing KM to a PPM effect is possibly murder on that talent and horribly screws Frost as a whole.  An internal CD of say 2-5 seconds would not be bad, similar to WF imbue for Enhancement Shaman.  But this PPM crap is a bunch of nonsense.  I HIGHLY recommend you guys follow this as well.  I’ll be sure to post about it again as soon as they make changes on PTR.

Now this Necrosis buff is a world full of win imo.  Buffing something I already include in my dps spec’s = awesome.  :D   Not sure how much though, but atm it gives you less total dps than BCB does.  So expect the long term investment here to be greater than the return on BCB since BCB is 3 talent points and Necrosis 5 talent points.

As a heads up, there is an extended maintenance today for WoW…

We will be performing maintenance for all realms on Tuesday, January 6th.  The downtime will begin at 3:00 AM PST and end at approximately 11:00 AM PST.

Sucks…I know.  But hey, I’ve already done 5 posts for you guys today while you wait!! ;)   Lovin’ from SJ is always sweet!!  Heh.

Website Ads…Help!?!

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in Website

Heya guys!!  So, looking for some friendly advice if you have it.  ;)   Several of my friends (in game and in rl) have told me I have to get some damn adds on the site.  So…ok.  I give.  Free money does sound good.  A site was recently suggested to me: Website Outlook.  This is supposedly an estimation of what you can make, and they give you a nifty little banner like so if you want one:

My site is worth $5898.4.
How much is yours worth?

Well this thing estimates my daily page view at 2116, which is massively incorrect.  You can clicky my Site Meter report here.

  • Average Site Visits per day: 3492
  • Average Site Views per day: 7377

Which would more than triple their current esitmate, meaning rolling in $20 a day roughly in ads *IF* their estimates were right.  Now…I don’t know about you guys.  But that means $140 free and clear a week…for doing something I LOVE!!!  /SIGN ME UP

So, I’m ignorant to ads online.  If you know of someone who wants to advertise here, know where I need to look, who to talk to, etc, etc, etc…  SHOUT OUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.  :D

Comment here on the site or E-mail me at:

-Suffer Well Brothers and Sisters.

P.S. For anyone saying, “SELL OUT!!!”  Yes, yes I will.  Heh  :P   I don’t want to be doing what I am currently doing for the rest of my life.  And if I can pull in some extra cash from a site I spend 20-30 hours a week working on, I think that’s a fair hope.  That’s not even minimum wage people.  :P

Death Knight Forums: PvP, Tanking, PvE, Etc…

Posted by: Skeleton Jack    in Website

Heya guys!!  So I’ve mentioned this once or twice before, and I’ve also recently had a few requests and/or comments about this as well.  I’m wondering how much of a desire and/or interest there is for this?  Now keep in mind, if I decide to do this it will not be an over night project.  It’ll probably be about 3-6 months down the pipeline.  Possibly earlier, but I’m being safe atm with an estimate.  I’d have to look into it, but since I own my site I am pretty sure once I found a Forum template I liked it wouldn’t be too difficult to get my Techie guy to help me set it up.

There is no way I could dedicate time to moderating the forum, which would me there would need to be volunteers.  Basically people who issue warnings and bans based upon improper posting.  It would follow similar guidelines to what you see at EJ and AJ Forums.  I’m not tolerating trolls or morons who just qq and whine.  Can’t stand that crap.  You wouldn’t need to be an “uber DK” with mad skills.  Just some basic internet savy and the ability to dedicate some time every few days minimum to issuing warnings or bans.  With the right community, readers will be able to send in reports on bad posts making this a very easy thing to do.

I’ll be posting up a poll soon with voting possibilities available to get a feel for what people want.  I need to find a way to get an actual count though, as the poll I have shows %’s and not people voting.  So, tell me what you think.  Leave a comment here on the site if you’re interested, and please vote once that gets updated!!

Things to remember

  1. Please see my “Best in Slot Items” (BISI) page for a comprehensive list of all BISI items.
  2. THIS DOES NOT WEIGH SET BONUSES.  I CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT THAT FACT IS!!!  I have not yet seen a good model for measuring the DPS gain from our T7 set bonuses, however the 4 set bonus is extremely good and will have a significant impact upon our DPS.  If you can attain 4 pieces of T7/T7.5, you should consider giving those items more value.  I do.
  3. These items are weighted using a system commonly refered to as APE, or Attack Power Equivalency.  This uses mathematical formulas, and often times simulators, to determine how much each attribute contributes to your dps.  It equates item stat values into a numeric value that equals 1 Attack Power, or 1 AP.
  4. APE means exactly what it says, this item has an equivalent value of x AP.  So if it says 1 is 519 APE and 2 is 492 APE, swapping from 2 to 1 would be like gaining 27 Attack Power.
  5. Take everything here with a grain of salt.  If you had all of your gear epic’d out from Naxx+, it’s likely your personal stats will skew the results of “best in slot”.  Short of running a simulator, it’s nearly impossible to know what the best stats are for any one character.  APE changes as your stats change.  As one stat goes up, its value to your dps goes down.  Meanwhile other stats’ values will go up in value.  This however is a good baseline, assuming you have the equivalent best in slot items and have kept your stats balanced while gearing out.
  6. Keep in mind also, my information could be wrong.  But even if it is, it is most likely the closest source of information to the actual truth about DK APE values.
  7. 18 Agi is effectively 1 AP due to the armor gain from Agi (read: Bladed Armor talent).  Also keep in mind that Agi affects only your physical crit, not your spell crit.
  8. Some stats can be capped.  You do not want more than you can actually use.  Items with a stat that you’ve exceeded the cap are not worth their “true” value anymore because you’re not getting all of the benefit.
  9. 262.32 Hit Rating is equal to 8% Melee Hit (this is the Melee Hit cap).
  10. 445.91 Hit Rating is equal to 17% Spell Hit (this is the Spell Hit cap).  The spell hit cap is 288.53 rating or 17% if you have 3/3 Virulence and Misery debuff up.
  11. The expertise cap is 123 rating or 15 skill for Blood.  The cap for Unholy/Blood is 172.15 rating or 21 skill.
  12. Your stats need to be balanced.  If you pick gear that always has +Strength on them, then you’re going to be screwed. These items are balanced around the concept that you do not overstack certain stats.  Aka, 4% hit and 3000 AP is bad.  But so is 15% hit and 1500 AP.  Sticking with these item lists will usually avoid that however.
  13. If you don’t agree you should seriously take a moment to stop and think about what factual data you have to back up that feeling.  Often times the number crunchers out there find things that look wrong to the average person.
  14. When gemming gear most of the time you will ignore the slot colors.  Only pay attention to slot colors when trying to meet a metagem requirement if you need to.  Otherwise every gem slot should be either +Strength, +Expertise, or +Hit.  These numbers assume you are using Rare gems available to any player.
  15. For more information on the Expertise and Hit caps you should read here: Hit and Expertise Revisited.
