3.0.8 Best DW Death Knight DPS Spec, Rotation, and Glyphs

Posted by: Skeleton Jack   in Rotations, Specs

Heya guys!!  So…time to put my foot in my mouth eh? ;)   Dual Wield spec is the highest, best, most redonkulous DPS spec possible for Death Knights.  An Unholy DK (which was the best) can attain 6k+ DPS in Best in Slot items eventually at Patchwerk.  A DW DK can attain 6k+ DPS in sub-optimal gear at Patchwerk.  And the DW build is getting buffs in the upcoming patch on top of it.  o.O

0/31/40 is the best DPS Spec in game.  Yes, the 0/32/39 spec is actually wrong.  But it’s an easy misconception players will eventually come around to.  Now there are alternatives to this spec.

  • Merciless Combat – 6% bonus damage to two of your attacks for only 35% of the fight does not stack up to benefits attained in Unholy.  Since the goal is to reach Howling Blast, once this is done you leave this talent with only 1 point.
  • Night of the Dead – The upcoming buff to this will grant your pets (Ghoul confirmed only atm) 70% avoidance to all AoE damage.  Considering that Ghouls do roughly 500-600 DPS full talented, keeping them alive is a big deal.  Add in that you can resummon pretty much whenever they die, and it becomes a no brainer.  While this is not useful in fights such as Patchwerk, this will overall give you more total dps on Boss Encounters than skipping it will.  If you’re looking to get ranked however, or to show off your E-peen at Patchwerk, skip this talent.
  • Unholy Aura – If you already have an Unholy DK in your raid then you can skip this talent.  If not, this talent is a mandatory Raid talent.  Not providing it when it is lacking is grounds to boot you from a Raid imo.  I sure as hell wouldn’t bring you if we didn’t have it and you refused to spec into it.  It’s like an Enhancement Shaman refusing to spec into Improved Windfury Totem and Unleashed Rage.
  • Bone Shield – If you can pull points from NotD or from Desecration, then you can pick this up (depending on your alternative spec choices).  If you are the only DK in the raid, and have nowhere else to pull points from then take it from Crypt Fever.  While NotD is a better buy, CF is not.  With only one DK in the raid, Bone Shield is greater than +10% disease damage.  If you are going for an E-peen build for Patchwerk, then you could pull NotD and get Bone Shield.
  • Desecration – This talent is sub-optimal for just about every Boss Encounter in game excepting Patchwerk and Loatheb.  Maybe 2-3 others tops.  And even on the others, there are times where you cannot count on standing in it always.

The E-Peen Build: 0/32/39

Basically this spec takes advantage of the points made above.  For a fight like Patchwerk where there is no movement or AoE damage to deal with, this spec will outperform anything.  If you want to get ranked on a site, or get SS’s of the best possible DPS spec…this is your baby here.  It is not however a practical raid dps spec, as it loses dps and raid viability on just about every single Boss Encounter in game outside of Loatheb and Patchwerk.

Weapon Choices

The consensus says that you need to go Fast/Fast for your two weapons.  Ideally using weapons ranging from 1.5 to 1.6 base weapon speed.  However I have seen reports of DW DK’s doing comprable damage with SLOW/FAST as well.  Due to the nature of player skill, gear, and RNG it’s nearly impossible to determine the factors on why they are both so close.  However napkin math atm does show FAST/FAST as the overall winner.  If you get a SLOW MH weapon that is 10+ dps more than your current weapon, I would likely swap to it until you find a FAST MH upgrade.

Rotations

PS -> IT -> BS -> BS -> HB
PS -> IT -> IT -> IT -> HB

*OR*

IT -> PS -> HB -> BS -> BS
IT -> PS -> HB -> IT -> IT

The basic concept is to keep HB at the same point in each rotation, while refreshing the disease DoT’s.  Whenever your Runes are on CD, burn your RP into Death Coils.  When possible burn your Rime proc’s on HB.  If HB is on CD when your Runes come up, just burn them in to IT/PS.  I’ve heard of a DK who did 6k+ dps on Patchwerk who did not use his Rime procs, but cannot confirm that information yet.

Glyphs

Glyph of Blood Strike is misleading to begin with because it works with BS and Heart Strike.  The deal here is that the Frostfire debuff applies to bosses, even though they don’t run slower.  Which means the BS Glyph works, and you get the bonus +20% to all of your BS and HS on any boss if there is one Frostfire spec’d mage in your raid.  And as luck would have it, Frosfire spec is the highest raid dps spec available for mages!!  /WIN  If you do not have a Frostfire Mage in your raid, then pick something else like PS or Bone Shield Glyphs.

Runeforging

The DPS gain from RI with any FF Mage in the raid makes this the overall best choice over FC and Rune of Cinderglacier, which is rather crappy to begin with.  Dual FC is probably the highest DPS possible, however there is no math yet to prove it.

Gargoyle

This lil guy benefits from your AP at the time of casting and also can gain buffs once cast.  Why is this relevant?  If you have Mirror of Truth, Rune of the Fallen Crusader, or some other item that can USE/PROC any kind of AP gain then you want to save your Gargoyle summon for when that happens.  You also need to coordinate with the Shaman in the raid to set a certain % of health to use Heroism, and to call out a 5 second warning before casting it in Vent/TS.

Typically Raid Leaders will call for Heroism to be thrown down at 35% (+/-) depending on the raid’s dps capacity.  Far too many class have relevant abilities that do bonus damage below 35% or 20% health.  So Heroism is typicall called for between 35-50% health on a boss depending on how much dps you can do.  On a few encounters it is called for at 90% in order to burn a boss down before he can unleash certain abilities, etc…

When you know roughly when the Heroism will be called for, prepare for it.  For about 20 seconds before the Heroism call, watch for AP procs and then fire it off.  You can even call in Vent/TS at that point that the Shaman can fire Heroism off when they are ready so long as there are no other DK’s who need to get a Gargoyle out as well.  Doing this will cause a massive damage spike to your Gargoyle.  I’ve seen him do 15% of my total damage on a boss before.

Itemization

Expertise Cap and Spell Hit Cap.  Just do it.  You can roll off with just Melee Hit Cap to start np, but eventually you want to reach Spell Hit Cap in a 25 man raid with debuffs out.  Need info on how to do this?  Go read here: Hit and Expertise Revisited

After that Strength is your best stat.  As to how to weight everything after that…I’m not sure.  I’m still trying to find some solid weight scales for this DW build, but it’s so new that no one has the math done yet.  We’ll see how it goes.

/FIN

So that’s it guys.  The best raiding spec possible, which is due for some buffs in 3.0.8, and all of the major tricks that go along with it.  I personally expect this build to see some kind of a nerf as Ghostcrawler stated more than once that they did not want to prop up DW builds and that they wanted to see 2H DK builds as the best viable DPS builds…  But we will see.

-Suffer Well Brothers and Sisters.

P.S.  I changed the pic.  I did not really like that pic.  I only used it because it reminded me of this one…so I just put it up again, heh.  ;)

Hey man,

Im currently a unholy 2h dps dk for my guild in 10mans and some parts of 25. as 2handed i am melee hit caped and expertise caped. On patchwerk i can get 3k-3.3k dps depending on the group makeup (10man). Would you recommended changing to duelweild spec to increase my dps OR should i stick with my current 2h unholy build for now?

Thanks,
Grid

Is Crypt fever really a better extra point over boneshield? it seems with DW the majority of your dmg would be from White Dmg and Howling Blast, neither which crypt fever effects.

And of course, if your raid makeup always pairs you with another DK, unholy aura on you both is pointless.

Hi, I’m planning to try out DW, any recommended weapons for me to start off? Rep weapons? Crafted Weapons?

Gridiron:
Which spec you play is up to you man. Honestly a lot of factors play in to your dps such as raid buff synergy, lag (Tues is now awful for 25 Naxx because of the instance server stress from so many raiders), etc… Also what is fun. Some people like big bumbers. Some just like lots of numbers. Whatever you have fun with, run with it. DW will outperform Unholy if done right however.

Rhune:
It worked fine. It looks interesting. But I’d be wary to use something like that without researching it first. Where did you hear about it? You can also E-mail me at: Skeleton.Jack@hotmail.com

Iampuff:
If there is no other DK in your raid then maybe you’d be right. However if there is just one other DK there, you should be CF. It stacks with EP. Not sure about everyone else, but we have 2 DK’s per raid, and occasionally 3. So it’s a no brainer to me. +10% to disease damage would be subpar to 2% bonus damage however if you were the only DK in the raid.

Zawulon
DW spec brings 20% haste to the raid, Unholy Aura, and Crypt Fever. I’d hardly say it’s just good for dps meters. That is a great deal of raid utility that they bring to the table still. Not to mention if you don’t have a War MT, then they cover the haste debuff as well that is equivalent to Imp Thunderclap. This is a very raid utility friendly build.

The Fang of Truth is the easiest to get (Wyrm Honored) and what you should grab right away. Those above are the top5 best 1H outside of raiding. Though there are plenty of comprable weapons in other Heroics etc.

I tested this out with decent gear http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Eldre‘Thalas&n=Ghouly
(at least for naxx 10) and dual fangs last night in some heroics and Naxx 10. Perhaps I was not ready for the rotation or the fangs were much lower dps, but it was under performing a tad for me. Sure I was hitting really fast, about 1.0 weapon speed but it did not seem to be dealing as much damage. Maybe this is also a better build for 25 man? These are just my observations and I am sure the results were user error. Thanks again for the great posts!

Hi SJ!
Last night I respecced one of my DPS DKs in the guild to this spec. He shelved his Titansteel Destroyer and picked up two Fangs. We then did 25 man Naxx and finished up our 10 man Naxx. His DPS was off the hook for both 25 and 10 man. Even going from epic to non epic weapons. I believe on a raid boss dummy he hit 2.8K dps unbuffed and on a regular lvl 80 dummy he did 3.3k.
Thanks once again!

I have no idea what you just said.

Noah:
You can’t walk out the door with a new spec and playstyle and expect to instantly own, I’m sorry. On top of that you’d have to examine your gear, raid makeup, etc… DW does outperform, but one run isn’t enough of a litmus test.

Zawulon:
I am personally going to be trying to get Hailstorms from Maly10, and the tank 1.6 axe off of KT heroic. Before then, I’m not respecing.

I tried this spec and I do really like it, even for some random battleground but what annoys me is the build is not suited for solo-ing stuff at all (imo).

With a 1.6 143dps weapon I heal with deathstrike for 1-3K (even with the deathstrike glyph and full rp). My guess is that maybe with a slow mainhand the healing will be better so I tried what I could heal with my 2h sword which normally heals for 4-6(7)K but even that one only heals for 2-4K on a deathstrike with this build.

Could it be that Crypt Fever is not counted towards number of diseases or am I missing something else?

January 2nd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
 19

Solo is not the same as raiding. Which is exactly why test dummy testing is so limited because you are not raid buffed. For soloing a slow MH is ideal, and you just cannot expect as big of a return on Death Strike. However once you’re in epics, you should still be fine for solo dps output.

I feel DW isn’t very beneficial to the raid, unless you have a blood dk/ (or enhance shaman already) or an unholy DK, just seems a waste of space when the only DK in the raid is DW depending on raid makeup… Buffing raid > better than seeing a DWDK with highdeeps

Nice write up SkeletonJack, I’m currently the standard 17/0/54 2H build and I enjoy it, but I’ve thought about playing around with a DW build like this.

Anyway, I have a question on which Glyphs you use for this DW build. You mention Glyph of Blood Strike, and that it works with HS, but in this build you don’t have HS anyway, so thats a little confusing. And then you don’t mention any other Glyphs, so which other Glyphs are you using?

January 3rd, 2009 at 4:29 pm
 24

Alex: Blood always. The only “Unholy Presence” specs usually state they are made for that Presence. They usually require a TON more work, and they usually never ever do as much dps as the “real” specs using Blood Presence.

If you click on the link, you’ll see it’s an MMO-Champion calculator. They list Glyphs with the Talent builds. It’s all there.

but MR DW spec doesn’t get ebon plague bringer, plus a shaman can as easily drop a WF totem as a warlock can put up curse of elements still but nerfs the warlocks DPS. So I still see DW worthless raid utility wise.

On top of that there will most likely always be warrior in a 10-25 man situation to use TCLAP, plus an unholy DK will cover up the useless DW “raid utility”,

Hey Jack, thanks for the great write up, Just speced DW yesterday and still getting used to it.
Just a few quick questions, what in your opinion is the highest dps/rune efficient rotataion when pulling average to larger packs. Also what presence would you recommend does the most dps in the “E-peen build” I’ve been using unholy which seems to be ok but I find myself locked out of using any abilities for a few seconds sometimes.

January 4th, 2009 at 4:26 am
 30

Dora:
If you do not have a Prot Warrior tanking, which TONS of guilds don’t in the LK world, then asking a Fury warrior to TC is stupid. They’d have to stance dance, losing a 2 GCD’s and a ton of rage, and the debuff would not be anywhere near as good.

Unholy DK’s will have EP, and CF stacks with EP for a total bonus of +60% disease damage. The synergy between the 2 specs is outright obnoxious actually.

A shaman has 16% haste, an Enhance/DW DK has 20%. One is better than the other.

The only buff a DW DK brings to the table covered by Unholy DK’s is Unholy Aura.

Just because you don’t like it, or think it’s cheesy, doesn’t make you right. The spec is solid, and it brings utility to the raid. And if you want to try to argue, “But this class bring that to the table.” Yeah, so what? That’s the POINT. No one class brings one unique buff. You sometimes have overlaps.

January 4th, 2009 at 4:31 am
Dora
 31

Shaman has 20% haste with talent and affects hunters as well, icy talons does not. I dont see how it brings “the best utility thats already covered”… Also you dont have to be in D stance for thunderclap.
So technically, if there is no prot warrior in your raid, they just bring the attack speed decrease :\ and actually tons of guild do have prot warrior in high end raiding system. Sure the spec brings utility if the raid DOESNT HAVE the utility already, which would be pretty sad and pathetic.

January 4th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
 32

Enhancement Shaman only have 20%. TC can only be used in Battle/Def Stance, and DPS warriors dps in BERSERKER stance. They win on both of those counts. You don’t realy understand what you’re talking about. They bring a disease buff for other DK’s, and a UA for raids without them.

Less than 30% of raids (total 10 and 25) bring Prot Warriors now. People use Feral, Tankadins, and DK Tanks now for MT’s. Prot warriors top out at 30% of raid content at most. Enhancement Shaman are even lower, especially on Alliance. The majority of older players who dropped their mains for Shaman to begin with rerolled new toons (many of them DK’s) for LK. Shaman were already one of the lowest, if not the lowest population base classes, and Enhancement was not even the primary spec.

Your arguements over what is brought to a raid is just stupid. DK/Enhancement bring the same things. Boomkin/Ele Sham bring the same things. Feral/Fury war bring the same things. The list goes on and on. That is the point.

I have a question about agility vs crit rating. KM procs the more melee crit you have, which is a lot for me atm.

I have ~20% melee crit and ~9% spell crit. Should i be stacking more crit rating over agility to boost spell crit? Basically, would http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37612 be better then http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37722?

With the 3.0.8 patch would you change the rotation for the maximum number of HB hits? I’m assuming yes, but I’d like to hear your opinion on that =) Something like PS -> IT -> BS -> BS -> HB -> HB -> HB (on the death runes provided there is time in diseases) is what I was thinking. Love reading your site by the way, informative and entertaining!

Jack – thanks for the posts, I’m a regular reader of your blogs – you’ve really helped me to learn the DK class since the release. B-)

I’m a bit confused about the use of Blood vs. Unholy Presence with this spec. I know Blood is definitely superior for your special abilities and getting bigger crits, but much of this build seems to rely on fast white hits to proc your buffs. Also, I sometimes find that when Rime procs, I can’t squeeze in HB and a full Runic power dump before my runes start to reactivate again due to the longer GCD. In this situation is it best to continue the rotation and dump all your runic power, or to start the next rotation with some RP left over?

Intuitively, I’m thinking that Unholy Presence would be a better fit. Faster attacks, more procs type of deal and more time for Rime/RP dump? Maybe you’ve done some testing on this.

Thanks for the advice.

Also, a quick correction to Beta’s post – the mace is a good choice, but DKs can’t use daggers, so don’t make the Titansteetl Shanker. I would advice going starting out with the Fang of Truth from Wyrmrest rep (honored), doing Heroic UP for the Red Sword of Courage, and saving badges for Grasscutter as an off-hand. Then after that start pwning Patchwerk for Hatestrike. Hope that helps.

@ Beta & Jack – Unless something changed, or i’m totally oblivious, which is quite possible on both counts, DKs cannot use daggers. So while the MH weapon is great, the OH weapon is a waste of money/time for a DK to try and use. But if DKs can indeed use Daggers please correct me…it’ll be yet another weapon I’ll have to level up for kicks and grins.

If you at the 8% melee hit cap, does adding more hit help when DW?

It’s more important to a DW build than a regular build since the majority of it’s damage comes from spells (IT, HB, DC) and not as primarily focused on Strikes (BS, HS, FS, OB, SS).

I’ve honestly stopped looking into the specs/builds for the moment due to the massive changes PTR has atm, and the dicussed changes by Blizz for DW. I plan on preparing in depth breakdowns on Each of the 4 major dps specs, itemization, and rotations once things are more finalized. For 3.0.8 you will want that new IT sigil from the venture company.

I just went this spec on my dk (modified because of NotD being worthless atm, so i picked up boneshield and finished Merciless Combat) and i do 1500 dps without my ghoul, 1700 with my ghoul, and this is provided that i do the rotation flawlessly. By the way, this is on a heroic target dummy. I do as much dps as 51/13/7. does dw spec simply scale better with gear? I have been sitting here doing dps runs on a dummy for two hours trying to figure out why this spec seems so lackluster when i am hitting every button i am supposed to at the correct time and getting the same results as i do as blood pve spec help plx!

I was wondering what you think about DW the Hatestrike weapon, is the damage on the weapon to low? in my tests it seemed that I was pulling more dps, not too much more with DWing the Ebon Blade Rep reward weapons

I have been trying the DW spec out and im in alot of best in slot purples and 4 piece setbonus, yet everytime ive tried this spec out with good weapons and everything i get maybe 2500-2800 dps on raid bosses or if its alot of aoe trash i can reach 4k. Ive matched your rotation and just dont see any of these “ungodly numbers” so what am i doing wrong? i get FAR FAR better dps on my Death’s Bite and deep unholy/blood builds. what am i doing wrong?

in response to deebo, (post 51) the attack rotation doesn’t need to be perfect, but you will want to have at least 400 hit rating to even try this and get desirable results, i’m cracking 2500 no buffs in mixed blues, heroic and naxx gear, 2600 with ghoul, a bit of expertise helps more than you could imagine too.

So I read the Hit and Expertise page. Just to make sure, all we’re needing is the 17% Hit for Spells and 8% hit for Melee Correct? While the majority of our dps comes from spells, a good portion comes from auto attacks. Is it worth tryingto cap 23% melee? or At that point would we just be gimping ourselves?

If that’s correct we need 17% spellhit, 8% melee hit, then socket/gem for Str, expertise, etc

i was wondering… does anyone else think that it would be good to take 2 points out of desecration and put them into epidemic? the reason i say this is because then you could do this:
dots, hb, bsx2

and then repeat this rotation:
hb, dots, (itx2 if death runes are up, bsx2 otherwise), hb

the purpose in doing this would be to increase the amount of howling blasts done during one rotation of dots. this would make it more likely that the proc from Killing Machine would be used on howling blast.

i just find that without epidemic i am burning my procs on icy touch too often during the second part of the rotation (which is mandatory to keep my dots up for howling blast to double in damage). about a third of the time when i put my dots up after bs-ing, the proc gets used on icy touch.

any thoughts?

Iv’e asked on your Patchwerk 5.7k dps topic, but im interested in this DW specc, what presence are you dpsing in? cus i have heard that unholy presence is nice for DW dpsing.. should i even bother to care about armor penetration or haste and does strenght boost your dps more then the crit with this specc?

the character is epicenter of arathor, i got acouple upgrades since then and i do like 30 more dps >.> scales great with raid buffs but if you have armor pen you are wasting your time. as far as my idea of what’s going on in this spec, i dropped one point in dawn of the dead and put it in bone shield for the 2% damage buff, which as i’ve noticed in a lot of fights does NOT have a 100% uptime. the run speed buff makes perfect sense to me as it’s either that or add time to your diseases, which at the rate of refreshment of the diseases is just unnecessary and you don’t need to put points into improved plague strike damage either really, i get howling blasts in the middle of a boss fight for around 8-10k, and as a result of how this spec works, you get no benefit from your set bonuses so sure, get em if you like the stats on them, but don’t use set bonuses as an excuse to roll on tier set stuff. i seem to be doing a bit less than deep unholy myself but the attack rotation isn’t entirely predictable until you are both hit capped and have a very high critical chance.

Used the DW spec on Sartharian and I did 8k DPS when the whelps came up which was sexeh, as well as that with proper tanking gear this spec is also a very viable add tank or even off tank, I managed to pull 4k DPS as a Tank.. Yes a Tank!

Awesome site mate, keep it up.

Normally I tank, but with the increase in the amount of available tanks, especially due to DK’s, I don’t always get a tankspot..sooo. I found this build of yours and joined Naxx 25 yesterday, with some badgegear and the “Angry Dread” naxx 25 mace..and I actually topped the dps and when I didn’t I was in the top 3…
It’s awesome mate :) Thanks

Ive tried this spec recently and with 286 Hit rating. Im in heroic epics and heroic blue 80s. using crafted bonecrusher in mainhand and wyrmrest offhand. I wasnt very used to it but in nax 10 man I got 3500 dps on maexxna. Not bad consiering the stunning part and such. I havent raided with 2hand unholy spec before only ran heroics with capped HR. Dw is much funnier so Im thinking of keeping it. Patch drops a good offhander aswell Im gonna try to get it, What im thinking now is though. Ive been doing some hit sessions on dummy. dummy had 4 mill hp so necrosis etc worked fine. I got around 2300 dps(horn buff on nothing else) and ghoul being up in UNHOLY presence. I got 2100 dps in BLOOD presence doing the exact same. I hitted for about 10 mins on both tries. no gargoyle etc used. How come that Im raising my dps with 200ish in unholy where as people always say that the stance is useless. also is it so that I have missunderstood and the unholy presence is meant to be used? There is no mention about it in this article. thanks

January 14th, 2009 at 4:56 pm

If you are doing more dps in Unholy than in Blood, then you’re either doing something wrong or not using large enough test samples.

15% white attack haste and 1sec GCD doesn’t remotely compare to +15% to all damage that you do.

More often than not people do not fire off runes and spend runic power properly. Which leads them to actually do more dps in Unholy presence because they miss too many attacks in Blood Presence. That is a skill related issue however, and not a mechanics issue.

think I can agree with you. its easier to miss the rotation in blood since more is up. Im following this rotation: PS IT BS BS HB DC DC->PS IT IT IT HB DC DC. rince repeat. maybe It can be tweaked somehow since I noticed I can blast 4 IT in a row sometimes hit BS and still be able to use HB. which raises my dps. thoughts? Btw regarding HR. Im capped as 2hander but only at 286 on DW. would you recomend me hitting 14(+3% from talent) to cap spell hit. I notice tons of resist on boss test dummy. Also would like to thank you for your helpfulness on the site. Regards Armel

Okay so last night my second “Hatestrike” dropped in Naxx as well as my legs, so it was dual weild time :) . I spent about 5 minutes on a heroic dummy with my previous blood spec and 2H weapon to see how much of a difference this would make. I then re-speced and equipped my swords and went another 5 min DW. I was dissapointed at first being well below my 2H dps, but after about 30 minutes or so of playing around with rotations and watching my runes I was able to consistantly do about 500 dps that my previous 2H blood spec :D . Great post and well founded. This is better.

Okay, I have been playing a DK and have enjoyed a version of this spec, but not this exact spec. I have gone slightly deeper into the Unholy tree to obtain Ebon Plaguebringer and Scourge strike as well as one point into Wandering Plague. My question is, is the damage of HB significant enough over the damage of SS to warrant not obtaining the benefits of Ebon Plaguebringer? Please read how SS works before posting, it is a spell.

Also I agree with the Slow/Fast weapon speeds because again if you read what your spells state they utilize a base value of your weapon damage, thus a slow weapon has a higher damage value, but your rune abilities are instant. Ponder ponder…..

I forgot something, utilizing SS also completes your rune sequence with no more available runes. My RP reaches it’s full potential Thus my sequence appears as such:

IT -> PW -> BS -> BS -> SS -> Horn ->DC

Next sequence replace Horn with another DC, RP should be there to execute this since there will be a remainder from the first sequence.

THANK YOU!

Finally DK info that isn’t horribly theory crafted and pulled out of some random person butt who’s biggest experience with a DK is a talent calculator.

I’ve tried 32/39 and agree it’s great for PW and crap for other boss fights. I’m currently in naxx 25/10 gear with JC only gems and the Ins shoulder enchant and of course hit capped.

I was playing around with specs and found that I was doing more damage going deeper into Unholy and using the typical UH rotation.

I plan on trying a 31/40 variation at least until we finally get a 2h drop form naxx 25…if it ever stops lagging that is.

Nice info on the site overall, bookmarked for later reading

Straight from the patch notes.. here is my only concern.

Killing Machine: Instead of a chance to be triggered on critical strike, this talent now has a chance to be triggered on each swing based on the swing time of the weapon (slow weapons more likely, fast weapons less likely).

Fast/Fast doesn’t seem as appealing as it did yesterday :( . So is Slow/fast or Slow/Slow going to be what we’re wanting? stack haste? J/w.

Since killing machine doesn’t proc on crits anymore it now procs from slower weapons. So this also takes the value of our crit down a bit no? What is our new WOTLK 3.0.8 Stat Priorities now? I.E. Hit >> Hit >> Expertise >> ?? >> ?? >> ??

I went into naxx 10 last night and saw a drop of about 400-500 dps from the gargoyle nerf and the killing machine change. Luckily I had a Torment of the Banished in my bag and for giggles i swapped that into my main hand slot and recovered about 100-120. Im guessing some tests will show SLOW/FAST or even SLOW/SLOW will be what the spec likes more.

I have been a believer in SLOW/FAST for sometime now. I notice significant increases in white damage and enjoy the additional procs for KM and BCB.

Since your damage that you deal from your MH weapon is the damage that is taken into consideration for each of your abilities i.e. BS, SS, Oblit, and almost everything else. The base amount is the damage that your weapon does on a percentage dependent upon the ability being utilized.

To help with the question above I have found that when you utilize two SLOW/SLOW weapons for DW instead of SLOW/FAST. I am seeing more Killing Machine procs and yes haste is the key. So speccing deep enough into Unholy to obtain SS and then deep enough into Frost to obtain Icy Talons and Imp Icy Talons is well worth the points spent. As well as utilizing the Unholy Presence. I cannot be exact because I am not in game and am at work, but I believe my two 2.60 speed weapons are currently around a 1.87 speed. I do have some haste on my gear as well though.

I got off subject, but anyways I noticed that after doubling up on my 2.60 weapons vs. what I was using a 2.60/1.70 there was approximately a 200DPS gain.

Now the real question is to Sigil with SS or to Sigil with IT ponder ponder…..

Just respec’d recently, and I’m still getting the hang of it. Picked up Titansteel Bonecrusher and the fang. Still not sure about The runes I should us. Currently I’m using Rotfc on MH, and Cindergalcier on OH. I didn’t see anything posted about incorporating Pestilence into the rotation on large aoe pulls. This combined with Howling blast does massive aoe damage, especially if your Rime and KM buffs are up. But you must be smart about it, as you will pull a crap ton of threat and die. 6600 on 6 mobs is very difficult for any class tank to manage. I can go from 5th on the threat meter to passing the tank in a heartbeat. hould I be doing this in moderation? Or should my dps be sufficient without doing this?

To use pestilence in your rotation, it would look like this:

PS IT BS Pest HB DC DC
PS IT IT IT HB DC DC

Thanks for all your help Skelly :)

What do you think about dropping the 2 points in Chill of the Grave and picking up Lichborne and Deathchill? Both of those give you some very nice benefits. Do you find the 5 rp gen from Chill would outweight those benefits?

Just some FYI guys. 2 things, actually.

1. The t7 gear………does not enhance this spec, whatsoever. It gives bonus damage to obliterate and scourge strike. :(

2. If you use this spec to pull the 4.5k-6k dps that it is capable of doing, be prepared for some monster repair bills. As if plate melee didn’t have it bad enough. You will pull aggro off of the best tanks in the game.

Right now I’m avaraging around 200g per night in repairs from getting smacked in heroic naxx. Just a few things to consider.

All you guys need to read more before posting. SJ has clearly stated that we should just chill for now as the PTR DW changes thus far are likely not going to be what we see go live and Blizz themsleves has clearly stated they know there is much work needed so that DW doesn’t get screwed. So don’t rush out and get all crazy 2H in the brain just yet :)

Ive learnt heapz the past week or so read all ur write-up Thx HEAPZ bud,

Now my MANY CONCERN is after raids 25 man nax runs, I’m checking my re-count, Im contanstly finishing in top 6-7, hoiwever the pie chart on recount is showing atleast 10-12% miss, Is this due to my underbuild expertise rating? as my Hit is capped @ 8.37%, however my expertise is well under par , it around 14=4%, to my understanding it should be at 27=12% correct ? Plz advise on wat i need to do to address this issue of miss. hits good, crits good but there is that 125 miss in there thats really CONCERNING. that 12% miss could be utelizes as hit/crit increasing the dam output

Sorry re above post expertise is at 77=14%, could this be the major contributor to my miss factor? or would it be counting as spell miss?
I believe it on the pie chart as Red being hit 45%, Green being crit 35% & miss being 12%? plz advised ur recommendations?
Im in 70% T7.5 gear, all epics from nax? so i just dont know wat else it could be? Awaiting ur advisse B4 I go stacking expertise gems, over strenght/stam gems?

Hello, I want to share my spec and macros for those who enjoy DW before 3.1 goes live.

In no way am I claiming to be the 1st or implying this is the best way to play your DW DK. This is simply an alternative for those who are looking for easy (lazy) mode way of DPSing.

Disclaimer:
I want to make some things clear I do understand I will be frowned upon and criticized for the use of /castsequence macros, my spec, rotations, and bad grammar. Call me a scrub, noob, or just a bad player. I don?t f-n care I know where this is going to go with some people. You have to understand I made it work and it has been really fun.

My Spec
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=jfVZG0ex0xbkhoZf0hhxckx0o

Spam Macro 1 (Single Target)

/castsequence reset=3sec Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Blood Strike, Blood Strike, Howling Blast, Death Coil, Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Icy Touch, Icy Touch, Howling Blast, Death Coil

Spam Macro 2 (Pop CD?s + Gargoyle)

/castsequence reset=3sec Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Blood Strike, Blood Strike, Howling Blast, Death Coil, Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Icy Touch, Icy Touch, Howling Blast
/petattack

AoE Spam Macro 3
Open up with DnD 1st

/castsequence reset=3sec Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Blood Strike, Blood Strike, Howling Blast, Death Coil, Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Pestilence, Icy Touch, Howling Blast, Death Coil
/petattack

AoE Spam Macro 4 (Pop CD?s + Gargoyle)

/castsequence reset=3sec Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Blood Strike, Blood Strike, Howling Blast, Death Coil, Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Icy Touch, Icy Touch, Howling Blast
/petattack

I love this AoE macro it?s great on encounters like:
Anub?Rekhan
Grand Widow Faerlina (If you?re burning down adds)
Malygos (Phase 2)

Perfect for:
Sartharian 3D
Maexxna
Grobbules
Noth the Plaguebringer

I have done fairly well with them and never really could talk to folks about it without getting some kind of criticism. I am aware it comes with the territory with any class. Before anyone decides to jump to conclusion and assume I do not follow up what goes in the DK community whether it’s here, EJ forums, Skeleton Jacks blog, or even Tankspot, well, that’s not the case at all. I have always tried to make things a bit easy for myself. I have met folks who can grill themselves to understand their class much more but end up coming up short or have nothing to show for it. This is my take on DW and I have enjoyed it a lot and I hope DW in 3.1 doesn’t die.

Sorry Suede aka Blacksteel. But you sir are wrong. You say your using Howling Blast, but you don’t even have a point put into the talent. In fact you are no where near the talent. Therefore you are not able to use it. If your going to post a good talent build and actually have intentions of helping others, make sure you post something that is realistically usable. Not something you just made up and want credit for to act like your Mr. Knowitall on DK’s. Good luck on your fail talent if you actually put those points into that talent spec…
