Want to up your game? Want to play better?

Posted by: Skeleton Jack   in Questions

Heya guys!!  WHAT IS THIS SLEEK PIECE OF GAMING PWNAGE!?!?  Glad you asked!!  This my friends is the Nostromor N52 TE (Tournament Edition) gamepad.  You can search around the web and find someplace else to buy it possibly cheaper, but I always recommend getting it here at Newegg.

Recently a reader asked about my keybindings, which was a very good question.  If you think about it, we have so many abilities at our disposal that it’s nearly impossible to quickly click on any ability at demand.  It’s hard.  And if you are keyboard turning (arrows) without using your mouse, you are WRONG.  End of story.  And especially coming from a Shaman…you think we have too much to click on…good lord totems take up so many buttons…

So how does this piece of gadgetry work?  That’s the wonderful thing about it.  You can program it to work any number of ways!!  It has three colors, as you can see the blue LCD light lit up already on the pic.  Depending on which color you are in determines what each button will do.  So in essence every key can be one of 3 different keys on your keyboard.

Me personally, I use the thumb button to switch colors.  Blue is the base, so if I press any of the keypad buttons it fires of 1 to = on my main bar.  Thumb Directional Control Back swaps the buttons to my second action bar.  And Thumb Directional Control Up swaps the buttons to my third action bar.  Also the Thumb Button is my spacebar key, or Jump.  Meanwhile my right hand is holding on to the mouse at all times.  I *NEVER* touch my keyboard ever.  If I have to type, then I touch it.  If I am fighting, the keyboard does not exist to me.

Uhm here is a pic of my setup:

This is the only pic I have of my computer atm, so you’ll have to make due with checking out my ex at the same time.  If you look between her face and arm, there is a keypad there.  That is the N52 TE above.  Basically that keyboard in the center is there for basic control of the computer and so I can type to people.

With the N52 TE you can do anything really.  I personally have it tied into 3 action bars and my push to talk key for ventrilo.  How you use it is up to you.  A buddy of mine who played a Frost mage had his strafe keys also bound into it so he could AoE grind mobs without ever having to turn his back to a mob.  By strafing everywhere he went, he could never be dazed.  It was weird watching someone always run sideways, but it’s incredibly effective when you think about it.  I just don’t have the patience to learn that skill however, heh.

If you want to improve your gameplay, this is the thing to buy.  It will do more for you than a stick of RAM, a new video card, etc.  Now don’t get me wrong, it is *not* easy to learn.  You have to train yourself to use keys you have never used before.  The first 1-2 weeks is pure hell.  You will want to throw the damn thing out of the window.  But if you practice and give it time, in the end your reaction time will be better than it has ever been and you will be a far better player.

My buddy Diremudflap, funniest gnome warlock I’ve ever met in my life, and co-GM of Category 5 turned me on to this baby.  Generally speaking, if he tells me about a new mod or piece of tech I perk up and listen now.  Hasn’t lead me wrong yet, and I wouldn’t do the same to you.  It took him months to convince me to go buy something that I refuse to even play WoW with without it.  Go get one.  It’ll be the best investment into WoW you’ve ever made.

I have read that the original nostromo was much better…that this version has some glitches and doesnt bind as well to some commands. I know its not available anymore other then thru ebay. I have been wanting to pick one of these up myself for awhile now…just havent gotten around to it yet.

/done heh, probably only Doom will get that one…it’s an inside joke :P

The original was better in that it had 1 other color. I actually liked having the 4th set of buttons and used them. /sigh

As to glitches or errors…never experienced it once. Also this keypad is much smoother and easier on the hand. The other took more effort to use all of th buttons (read: pressure or strength). This one fits your hand well, takes less effort, and that means that your hand hurts far less if you play a lot.

The walls are white. The camera phone was just that crappy, heh. I never look at the walls, just the computer. heh

I feel the same about my Saitek Pro Gamer Command Unit. I don’t think I can play without it at this point. I had seen that something new was in the works from logitech though. Its the called the G13.

The only think that I think would not work very well is the thumb hat. because its laying down, as opposed to an angle. When your playing games or type, the pad on your thumb tends to rotate in. That is where I would think that they would that hat positioned. But what do I know :P

I’ve been taking a pretty hard look at these types of game pads past few months. I’ve heard the N52te had some issues with the thumb key, the back lighting can get annoying in a dark room and that players favored the original as well. I think that I’m going to buy an Ideazon Fang to dabble with since its cheap and I’m not 100% sold that it will be a life changing event in my gaming world.

If you have a G15 keyboard, which I do, then I don’t see how the backlighting could annoy. And when you consider how many thousands upon thousands of people swear by their G15 which also has backlighting…trust me it’s not a big deal. You don’t even notice it after a while.

The thumb key doesn’t take a monumental effort to use it when compared to the old one. Probably took me 2-4 weeks to be able to move it properly because I would overcompensate for movement. People got used to pushing hard and to a certain spot. The new one obviously is a little different.

Change isn’t always good, but in this case it was.

So Ive been navigating the site for a bit and i really really like it. Ive found more answers to a lot of my questions from you SJ then I have roaming EJ. Lately I find EJ is full of junk and nothing but theory crafting thrown all over the place (that’s another story for now). While i was navigating the site i found this blog on the N52te. I was wondering… I use a G15 and im used to spamming my 1-5 for most of my attacks, now with that keypad Its hard to imagine how to fit those keys in there when i already hotkey everything around “wasd”. I just want to know more about how you converted over to the N52te

Ok so the N52 TE was on the shelf at the electronics store right next to the WOW gaming mouse. I even had it in my hand walking around the store. But decided to go with the gaming mouse. =( bad choice i guess based on your review. So do you use your mouse as the primary controller of your toon as far as running and turning etc.?

I’ve been thinking about chancing my gaming-gear for some time now, this looks kind of promising.
Now Razer has announced some special mmo-gaming-mouse and I’m wondering what might be better for me in the end. Today I use logitec MX518 & do kind of everything extept turning around with my keyboard.
Does anybody have experience with this kind of mice?
