Our guild just uses need/greed for our runs. We are a pretty friendly guild, so anybody that needs an item for their immediate spec just needs it.
If you need it for an offspec, you greed it.
If you don't need it at all, we do a third roll afterwards.

People play by the rules, it works fine. We don't bother with anything like DKP, it makes raiding just seem like another kind of work.

Our guild will not use DKP. One of the things we enjoy about our guild is the ability to get to know each other. We know who needs what. We know who are players are. Always need before greed. Our raiders are unselfish and we will always see someone who could use the item pass on it just to help the next player out. It's kind of a cool dynamic that we enjoy. DKP works for some guilds but for us, it has never been needed. At least up through Black Temple pre-WotlK.

There are 3 typical ways that people use their DKP (or equivalent)
1. Hoarding, meaning that they are uncontested when what they want drops. Typically focused on 'best in slot' items only.
2. Normal, these are the peopel that know an upgrade when they see it and grab it when they can. These are the people running around in 4pc tier gear before the rest of the pack because they manage their DKP well.
3. Bottom feeders. These people take anything and everything that falls into the available range. Typically have 0 best in slot or tier gear, but have top 5 gear in every slot for every spec they can raid with.

I think Need/Greed works well for 10 man stuff. But, for 25 man, there is definitely the need for some kind of loot system.

The best solution is a group of people that "work well with others" ... having a situation where someone in the raid says, "well, this is a bigger upgrade for you than me, take it." is what we try and nurture. The problem is, not everyone is like that. :(

We're currently just using the built in need/greed system for our runs (10s). I believe when we get up to doing 25 mans I'll be implementing a DKP system.
